The Human Message of Artemis II Astronauts

From the Technical to the Human: Artemis II Reflections
(A once in 50 years learning opportunity for us)

The Artemis mission was built on years of scientific rigor and technical precision. But when the crew of Artemis II finally returned home this week, the message that moved me wasn’t about rocket thrust or spacecraft trajectories.

It was about us.

I watched the launch and splashdown, eager to hear the first reflections from these four astronauts. After seeing the world from such a unique perspective, what would they tell us?

While the mission's focus was technical, the astronauts returned with a message that felt deeply human...even spiritual. Here is the vision they shared for where we could go next as a society:

Commander Reid Wiseman: "It’s a special thing to be a human and it’s a special thing to be on planet Earth."

Victor Glover: Spoke of a gratitude "too big to just be in one body."

Christina Koch: Looking back at our world as a lifeboat in the blackness of space, she realized, "Planet Earth, you are a crew."

Jeremy Hansen: Noted that while the science is incredible, "it’s the human experience that is extraordinary... gratitude, joy, and love."

Perhaps our next great transformation isn’t a technical one, but a human and spiritual one. Beyond the tech, we are being called to lean into something bigger: our shared humanity and the "crew" we belong to here on Earth.

I was grateful and inspired to hear this message.
