Hello! 👋

In many episodes over the past few weeks, we’ve been diving deep into AI and its applications in healthcare.

We may be on the verge of an information overdose on AI in general, but when it comes to medical applications, every conversation I've had with guests on the show has left me speechless! From family medicine to specialties such as radiology and surgery, to clinical biology and prevention, not to mention the prospects it opens up in terms of new treatments, it's certainly a subject that inspires a great deal of hope! And a little hope in these uncertain times (especially on cold winter days) can only do us good…

What to listen to this week:

  • #39 - you might be a user of Withings products yourself, you know, these minimalistic connected health devices that started with weight scales, now include at-home urine tests and stethoscopes! Matthieu Menanteau is their Head of Product, and he takes us through their pillars for crafting the best-connected health experience, and the devices that go with it!

  • #40 - this might be the most important episode on the implications of AI in medicine if you had to listen to one only! Jean-Philippe Vert is a world leader in computational biology and machine learning, leading the R&D efforts at Owkin and having co-founded Bioptimus. We dive into the use of AI to develop new drugs, new diagnostic methods, and the creation of the first foundation model for understanding biology in the broadest sense. A breathtaking episode, that provides many clues to the revolution underway!

  • #41 - I wanted to do an episode focusing on the microbiome for a long time. I was foreign to all the progress made in this field over the past years, but Leo Graddy from Jona got me up to speed on the crucial role it plays on our health in general, and why we need new tools to understand it better. It turns out AI might be the solution, as we are now able to link everything we know from science to the specificities of one’s microbiome composition!

DeepSouth: the supercomputer that’s almost like your brain

In April 2024, DeepSouth, a supercomputer designed to mimic the human brain, will go online, performing 228 trillion operations per second. Unlike traditional computers, it uses a brain-like system of neurons and synapses, making it efficient and energy-saving. This innovation could open new doors in AI, neuroscience, and energy-efficient computing, offering insights into how our brains work without needing all that power and space.

The future of computing just got brainier…

A bite into dental history

The first recorded tooth extraction dates back to ancient times, and while we might think of modern dentistry as a recent marvel, early civilizations had their own ways of dealing with dental pain. Archaeological findings suggest that as far back as 6,000 years ago, people were performing extractions or other types of procedures using primitive tools such as flints, bones, and even shells!

A flint, a bow drill, and a whole lot of bravery were needed… 😬

An experimental reconstruction of a bow and flint-tipped drill used to bore through molar teeth found at a Neolithic graveyard in Mehrgarh, Pakistan.

#morehope - if you're still not convinced of the power of AI in medicine, read this article from the Washington Post, which, as its name suggests, calls for our recognition of scientific advances in the field. Perhaps it will change your mind? 😉

Be well,

Mathieu & Abderrahmane
