Sycamore sunset

Where are we?

At a a roadside park. Stretching my legs during a summer drive. A sycamore hangs over a lake as the sun goes down. All the colors I see shifting in the wind and light are brought together in one place for you. Nothing in the world is ever just one color.

What colors do we see?

Pilot Iroshizuku inks: the ‘shading’ characteristic of these inks provides a range of tones across the paper. Fine lines tend to be darker and wide washes can seem like a different color altogether.

Momiji: Autumn Leaves red with a startlingly pink wash

Murisaki-shikibu: Beautyberry rich purple

Chiku-rin: Bamboo light green

Tsuki-yo: Moonlight deep teal blue

What tools are used?

2 Lamy Safari fountain pens with converters, Extra Fine nibs. I had teal and red in my pens. Added green and purple and washes later.

What supports the work?

Two Rivers “Turner” handmade cotton/linen rag watercolor paper. 140#/300gsm. NOT surface. This is a thinner, perhaps drier feeling paper with flecks of unbleached linen fibers across the surface. There is a light gray tone in the paper, muting the feel to the twilight I wanted. Quarter imperial 11”x15”
