Welcome back to the Bendy Bulletin! One of the greatest challenges in diagnosing complex chronic illnesses isn’t a lack of intelligence, effort, or expertise. It’s the way our brains naturally process information.
Whether you’re a patient trying to make sense of years of unexplained symptoms, a clinician evaluating a complex presentation, or even using AI to organize information, we’re all susceptible to confirmation bias.
Confirmation bias is the tendency to notice evidence that supports our existing beliefs while giving less weight to information that challenges them. It’s a normal cognitive shortcut that helps us process information efficiently. In medicine, however, it can sometimes cause us to stop asking questions too soon.
