Trying to Make Our Way Home

Dearest Reader,

I’m back from a trip to the West Coast, where I played duo sets alongside Johnny Wilson on guitar, opening up the night for Rhiannon Giddens, Mavis Staples and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

In Seattle upon arrival I made sure I got some good meals in. I knew I needed fresh oysters so we headed to Bar Bayonne, that was surprisingly chill amidst the World Cup fever. It was divine, perfect vibes, incredible salad, beautiful sandwich.

Then we headed to Shiro’s Sushi, where I went in on the tasting menu and ate so many delicious things I couldn’t tell you what. Since I floated away so you will have to just relish these photos.

The next day was our show, and I met many of you after our set, right before we had to hit the road and cut some of our long drive down. You guys were charming and funny, bright and Gay, some of you new to discovering this band of mine, some have been huffing along side me as we make this thing happen, some of you have non binary kids and want to support them, that always touches my heart.

As we headed to Bend for the next show, we passed through Portland. I knew I wanted a big meal to start the day so we hit up this spot Memorie Cá Phê. I am sold on catfish for breakfast now, and I officially a porridge head. Porridge for life!!

Driving out we swerved through National Forest with Mount Hood looming overhead and through mist I could only describe as Jurassic Park-esque. I thought I took a whole video and it turns out I only recorded one second. So enjoy this one second of majesty.

The show in Bend was gorgeous and ya’ll came out despite it being cold (!) and rainy (!) I got to hang with Rhiannon a bit, and boy it’s obvious when you encounter a genius. It’s a remarkable thing, the energy in the room changes. Her vision is expansive and creative, she is a builder and a collaborator, she is a see-er. Encountering someone so focused, so inspired, so brilliant is a gift, I am grateful. Stoked to head back out for more shows with that lineup at the end of July.

For now we got some band shows in Chicago area coming up. Next Friday the 10th we play a show at Fitzgerald’s that is sold out, and then Saturday the 11th you can catch us in Lincoln Square at Square Roots festival.

On the 17th I am going to play an acoustic set at Sleeping Village with my friends & favorite band in the world Twisted Teens. It is sold out and I am just happy to see the show honestly! Will open up the night playing my sad songs. I first met Caspian when I was a little gutter punk so it’s pretty fun to still be alive and making music.

I am going to leave you with a cover I have been playing live lately, “One of Us” by Joan Osborne. This song speaks to me through the immense grief of this fucking soul grinding time we live in. My religion is music is God and love is God and we are all of that energy source. We are capable of both monstrous and angelic acts. I see that light in you and I hope, dear god you are hanging in there.
