The Nature of Expression is Changing

Something shifted in me during that last Scorpio Full Moon – and it’s still shifting.

It’s akin to turning of a large ship in water; the movement is happening, the pivot is clear, but the force and momentum requires patience for the complete transition.

Do you feel it too?

The shift is definitively (and appropriately) connected to my expression. For some time I’ve heard this small voice, distant but coming from within me, telling me something isn’t right. Something isn’t sitting easily. Something needs to change.

The Full Moon turned that voice up to full volume, and it’s become increasingly more clear day by day.

My expression needs to change. The creative outlets I’ve been using no longer fit. I need to turn this ship another direction.

The quiet voice first spoke clearly when I was attempting to talk out some physical discomfort in my body to a friend. Mars ruled lunations generally disturb my system in ways that mostly feel like restless, untethered, amorphous irritation; a feeling I can’t quite place my finger on but it’s so physically present it can’t be ignored.

As I spoke, and finally gave this quite the voice some air time, it became undoubtedly clear that I’ve been using the practice of astrology to help me gain a feeling of acceptance. My creative energy was being funneled through this ancient system as a way to be relatable, gain community, and achieve connection.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with that; we each have our areas of interest and expertise that we offer as extensions of us, and because they are extensions of us we desire appreciation and validation of those things in return. They offer us a sense of belonging.

The part that got sticky for me, though, and the part that became undeniably loud, was that I’ve been using astrology as a way to protect my voice and my expression - so that as it filtered through the vehicle of astrology it gained acceptance. I gained acceptance.

I’ve done this many times before. When I was a teenager I used music as a way to connect with others and find the people that were like me, but I also used it as a way to express myself and attempt to have a part of my identity be seen via the bands I associated myself with. I did it with yoga, where I found and created community through the classes I took and offered, but also hoped a part of me would be witnessed in the experiences I designed and the lessons I taught.

I’ve done this over and over, where I’ve taken something I loved, felt connected to, or was drawn to understand, and then hid behind my experience and offerings of it as a way to say, “you can look at me but only through this lens” so the rest of me could stay protected.

It become clear that yet again I’ve been hiding, and I don’t want to hide anymore.

This season is asking us to change the nature of our expression; to pull back the layers and masks and barriers to let the quiet, honest voices that have been timidly waiting inside us speak at full volume.

Gemini is a sign that is inherently social, and so the voice that’s carving it’s way through you will not be just for you. It won’t be found in the voice notes you keep to yourself, or the journal entries you keep hidden in your bedside table. The unfiltered, unbounded voice that’s wanting to stake it’s claim on your identity will be found in your relationships, your connections, and the spaces in which you desire reciprocity, belonging and understanding.

This might mean that how you show up to your communal spaces starts to look different. It might mean that as you sit down to write your public content, new words find their way into your storytelling. It could look like sending new kinds of emails to different people, or with different tones, or sending texts you’d previously withheld yourself from sending. Perhaps as a new expression finds it’s way through you you end up finding yourself desiring to connect with different people, in different places, in the direction of different curiosities.

I say follow the threads. Go down the rabbit holes. Let yourself be pulled by the longings of the voices you’ve unconsciously kept quiet for too long.

Similarly/alternatively, this season might not feel quite as much like a declaration of something that’s been aching to be expressed, but more like a discovery of a part of you you’d never known was there. A side to your sass, your humor, your artistry, your wisdom, your personality that starts making itself more concretely known.

The archetype of Gemini illustrates the understanding of a full spectrum of experience. The two twins delineate two opposing sides, but they hold a connection of lineage, ancestry, soma, and physiology between them, which means that through their connection they see the full story that lives within their edges.

This season asks you to explore that space between the definitive boundaries you think you know. To define yourself not by what you are or aren’t, but by everything you allow yourself to explore, get curious about, and all the ways you are permeable to stories and expressions of life.

I define myself first and foremost as a creative – not because of my background in design and art, but because I am human. Our nature as human beings is to create, to express, to take what lives inside and moves through us and offer it to others.

As I experience the energetic shifts of the cosmos with you in real time, I find myself in a moment where my expression is changing and being pulled in new directions, and I must yield to what my energy is telling me I have to do.

In lieu of that, because so much of my expression is fused into my work, that means I also have to let go of certain aspects of my business and certain ways that I’m offering my creative energy.

I am lucky enough to have built a business that is flexible enough to allow for this kind of change; to be able to yield to the momentum as it shifts direction. I am grateful for that, and for this opportunity my instinct is calling me into to liberate into something new.

I know that as I write this, and as you read it, something is also shifting in you. There is a piece of you that is outgrowing it’s container and calling for liberation into a new shape. The nature of your expression as we step into Gemini season isn’t just being reconfigured and redefined, it’s begging for more room than it’s been given. You just might not know exactly how or why just yet.

We’re shifting into an era where curiosity will be valued, innovation will arrive with rapid fire results, and change will be ubiquitous. There are many questions that lie ahead, and I’ll be the first to say it - I definitely don’t have the answers.

Under all of my creative expressions, the main question that’s lingered around me has been – how am I supposed to live this life in this body that I’ve been given to inhabit?

Every outlet I’ve pursued has been in search of answers to that question – in attempt to uncover some kind of road map to help me make sense of where I’ve been going and where I’m heading.

Right now I’m discovering the value in not knowing. In choosing to forge ahead in the dark and with my eyes closed, letting the pulls of my body inform my next step. I’m yielding completely into trust and allowing a mindset of curiosity - the humbleness of not knowing - help me name the path as I tread it.

For that reason, I will be pausing offering horoscopes and astrological teachings (save for one post on the houses I already have scheduled). Astrology will still be infused into all of my writings and offerings, but it will not be centered in the way it has been. In my desire to live into less concrete definitions of my experience and my quality of time, prediction must be taken off the table.

I am not here to give you answers, I’m here to show you how I’m anchoring into my own lived experience and inviting you to do the same. I’m here to invite you into more intimate connection with yourself and your voice, and to find the answers to your questions on your own by peeling back all the layers that keep you from trusting your path.

If this changes your relationship to my Substack, I completely understand. If you choose to unsubscribe, I completely understand. The truth is there’s a million other astrologers offering horoscopes all over the internet and there’s a million places to find a certain definition of your self and your quality of time reflected back to you if that’s what you’re aching for.

My desire is to be here to offer you contemplations that lead you to your own conclusions - or perhaps better questions. My goal is to help you define the shape of your lived experience. My hope is to help you to make sense of what is happening right in front of you and the energy that you’re navigating – to give you pathways to determine your own language for your experience.

This season, I might ask you to consider where you’re holding your expression back – out of fear, out of not knowing, out of lack of discernment, out of being afraid of the dark or the process that lies ahead of you by saying yes or no where you would normally be saying the opposite.

If you allowed yourself to express the way you really wanted to - if you listened to the quiet voices that have been waiting for you to turn up their volume - what would you say?

I invite you, particularly in this season, to allow yourself to say no where your gut says no – where your body says no. And say yes when equally pulled in that direction.

This is not the time to yield to the pressures of your former existence or your former voice. This is an era where you are being invited to step into a broader, more authentic and true and liberated expression of yourself. Now is the time to claim it before you are shaken into it without your choice, because that’s what Uranus and Gemini will do if you do not yield to the calls.

This is not a space for me to tell you about your life or tell you who you are. This is about you finding it for yourself and hopefully me being one of the people you turn to to help you make sense of the shape of what you’re looking at.

So moving forward, what you will find here rather than horoscopes in this monthly article is:

  • (01) a monthly orientation of the solar season ahead infused with story, truth, and meaning-making

  • (02) questions to contemplate for the season, designed to help you swim though and with the energy and come to your own unique conclusions of what’s arriving for you

  • (03) somatic and creative practices - the ones that have been offered in a separate article - will be offered here to guide you into tangible, physical experiences of the energy of the moment.

For those of you that choose to stay with me through my own evolution of my voice, I appreciate you - so, so much. I’m grateful to be with you through all the evolutions.

  • Beyond the daily distractions and a surface layer pulls on your attention, what curiosities are asking to be explored? If you had endless time, what would you let yourself endlessly learn about?

  • What have you been taught about restlessness or changing your mind? Do you let yourself let go of what no longer interests you, or do you feel a responsibility in staying or “seeing things through?” What is the value in changing your mind or changing course?

  • What people, spaces, experiences help you feel safe enough to expand? When you’re in the process of coming to an understanding, or a desire to make sense of something, what people and spaces do you turn to to safely explore as your process, without having to know or come to any conclusions?

As we make our way through late May to mid June, the air is textured by connection, sweetness, an abundance that’s accessed through the appreciation of our relationships and beauty, and a great desire to slow down. Now is the moment of the year where we can restore and refill our cups energetically, psychically, and somatically.

The lunations of the season - a Sagittarius Full Moon on May 31st and a Gemini New Moon on June 14th - both indicate a somatic experience of exploration; through the mind and for the purpose of gaining insight, education, and wisdom.

Combined, the influences of this energy makes me think of the safety, stability, and security that is required for us to be able to stretch out and expand.

Taking the perhaps over used analogy of the tree – there must be as many roots anchoring into the soil as there can be branches above. The tree can not reach it’s fullest expression without it’s depth of nourishment and fusion with the soil.

Additionally, a single tree is one of a network of trees that connect through their root systems within the soil; so they never stand sturdily alone. They’re ability to reach out is because of their connection to each other.

This season I encourage you to lean into the nourishment at this moment allows for, through (01) allowing for rest and (02) nurturing connection.

Rest is not something we all know how to access easily. A full night sleep is a challenge for many folks to experience. Being able to set down the phone or turn off the tv can feel like a massive challenge. The ability to not reach for the next “to-do” on your task list can feel like a mountain to climb when productivity is so revered.

But rest can take a million different shapes beyond closing your eyes and turning off the noise. In fact I have a podcast episode about the 7 types of rest if you want to learn more.

Sometimes rest can take the shape of spending time with people that you love visiting art galleries and eating good food. Sometimes rest can look like going for a run in the woods listening to your favorite music that hypes you up. Sometimes rest can look like reading that book you’ve been aching to read because it slows down your body, breath, mind and calms your nervous system.

This season, I encourage you to take the rest that you desire to take, even if it feels like a stretch to do so. With Venus and Jupiter both in Cancer, I’ve offered a list of water-based nourishment that could feel rejuvenating, but I encourage you to make a list of your own restful activities and allow yourself to take as many of them as you desire this season:

  • Take a long bath that’s not too hot

  • Spend time at the beach listening to the waves

  • Jump in a pool. Let your body float.

  • Lay in grass or sand without doing anything

  • Drink water often

As the trees so eloquently demonstrate for us, we are only as tall and strong as our foundational connections, and our connections inherently need care and tending to in order for them to thrive. This season is a beautiful time to connect with the people in your life that support you, and offer messages of appreciation and love.

These messages don’t have to be long - they can be simple quick texts or little voice notes. But especially for the folks you haven’t connected with in a long time or don’t get to connect with often, this is the season to remind them of how much you appreciate their presence in your life to fortify your bond. A few ideas:

  • Send hand written letters to your closest friends or even clients!

  • Send short texts of all the things you love about someone to them.

  • Start a back-and-forth email exchange with a friend or family member who’s far away; give them updates about your life, send photos, and ask them to share in return.

  • If you don’t have a ton of time, schedule texts! I love doing this when I think about someone who’s in a different time zone. I’ll write my text, and schedule for them at a time that’s better for their time zone, and then get surprised when they text me back!

  • The Summer solstice at the end of Gemini season (6/21) is a beautiful time to express gratitude and appreciation. If you don’t know when to send your love notes, this is a great day.

Wishing you a season full of honest and true expression.
