Before I met my fiancé I didn’t know what “sport mode” was in a car. I don’t think I even knew it existed. He’s lived in New York for the last 24 years, and many of the those years he’s betrayed the stereotypical New-Yorker-transplant persona and owned a vehicle (motorcycle or car) simply because he abhorred not being in control of how he got from one destination to the next (aka the subway).
I’ve also always loved driving, so we have this in common. When I was a child I dreamed of the day I could get my drivers license, and after I proceeded to get permit at 15 I drove myself the 16 miles to and from school every day in high school. I even regularly rented Zip Cars after moving to Brooklyn because I loved the autonomy and fun of a car.
But never did I care about “sport mode.”
If you don’t know, most cars include an option to shift into a faster mode of operation, that allows you to let a little (or a lot) more loose on the road. My fiancé indulges in this often, sometimes for the thrill of the speed and sometimes just for getting past a few sluggish vehicles. Thankfully, he’s a smart and responsible driver and can anticipate the movements of cars in ways that seem telepathic, so I’ve never felt like our lives were at risk even at certain speeds.
When I think of the astrology that April holds, I think of it as akin to sport mode. As of April 10th we’ll have the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Neptune and Chiron in this cardinal fire sign, and on April 15th Mercury (and temporarily, the Moon) will be joining this raucous party.
That means there will be a major ramping up of motivating, driving, restless, powerful, activating, and potentially stress-inducing, competitive, angsty, and aggravating energy beginning as soon as April kicks off, continuing through the month… and perhaps a little into May.
How you relate to this energy will be what defines your quality of time.
If you have yet to explore your relationship to anger and frustration – this might be the month you’re forced to.
If you don’t know the difference between excitement induced anxiety and insecurity based anxiety – this might be the month that you learn.
If you don’t have practices for funneling powerful emotions in ways that are productive rather than destructive – this might be the month those are defined for you.
Ideally, this is the month where the dreams, visions, and intentions that we seeded during Winter get ignited and we see ourselves organically moving them forward – burning down whatever obstacles are in our way from supporting their growth. But worst case, we get so caught up in lighting things ablaze we don’t realize we’ve started a forrest fire that’s grown out of control.
By the time we get to the week of April 19-25, the compulsive energy will hit it’s peak. As Mars, Mercury and Saturn all come together in this sign of the Ram, challenging conversations, thoughts, exchanges, and ideas might be boiling over, and none of us will be immune to the feeling of sand paper rubbing over our sensitivities. When Uranus finally moves into Gemini - to stay for the next 7 years - our social experiences will be set ablaze but in a way that has us buzzing rather than inflamed.
Overall this is a month to address how to best ground yourself and channel your heated energy. Not in temporarily therapeutic or cathartic ways, but in ways that have you feeling anchored with clear and defined outlets for funneling your fuel.
This month I’m offering two very practical ways to use this energy:
001 Dispel Heat Physically
002 Spring Cleaning

As a yoga instructor of 13+ years it’s very apparent to me that some emotional experiences can best be transformed and processed through physical activity. Not to say that going for a run or a pilates class will solve all your problems, but emotions are energy in motion after all, which means they want to move you.
For the more heated emotions such a frustration, anger, jealousy, rage, etc. (the one’s we’re not often taught how to work with in healthy or productive ways) sometimes matching the emotional heat with physical heat can in fact dispel some of the power the emotion has over the body, thereby allowing the mind to shift into more rational thinking.
This month it’s not a matter of if we’re going to be experiencing these emotions, but when, so why not create a small game plan for how to channel that intense energy so that it becomes a little more productive to work with, ya know? I recommend doing this by choosing an activity that matches the experience of heat in the body:
Hot yoga
Going to a sauna
Cardio
Breath of Fire breathing practice
Going on a strenuous hike
Taking a hot bath
Similar to how drinking a hot beverage on a hot day can actually help the body regulate and cool down, it can often be the same with creating heat in the body to help relax and clarify the heated emotions charging through us.
If you know there are other activities that safely build heat in your body that are not on this list but that you love - choose those!
Perhaps a little on the nose, but truly this is a fantastic activity for April - particularly on or around the Aries New Moon on April 17th. The planet that rules the sign of Aries is Mars, and Mars is often known as the planet that cuts, severs, separates, or removes. For that reason, when it’s in a strong place (as it will be for all of April) it’s great to use for removing things out of our lives that we no longer need or want. Aka it’s great for a solid seasonal clean out.
That said, there is a potential for going overboard with this impulse this month, so I recommend connecting to Jupiter still being in Cancer and not completely forgetting your emotional or nostalgic attachment to certain items. Just perhaps hold both impulses at the same time.
As with everything I recommend going about this with a bit of strategy:
Pick a room or an area of your living space that could use a refreshment of energy or a thorough clean out.
Schedule a solid chunk of time where you can let yourself get immersed in the act of cleaning, organizing, clearing and perhaps tossing/donating.
Pick a method – I personally love the Marie Kondo method of pulling everything out and then organizing items into piles of “love,” “maybe,” and “donate,” but you can go about it any way you like.
Put everything back in a way that feels thoughtful and loving - for the space, the items, and yourself.
End by celebrating your accomplishment in someway, perhaps with a little sweet treat, a long restful bath, a night out with a friend - anything! But definitely be sure to honor your efforts.
