Chapter Thirty-One
Thankfully the Squites wended their way over the creek and into the trees where they disappeared after a while. With nothing to worry about, Riese and Cooper sat by the creek and snacked on the food, sipped cider, and talked.
It was so nice. So very very nice.
After a while the sky above started to grow first pink then hazy gray then a pleasant deep blue. Stars flickered to life above them.
Riese glanced back down the path they’d come from which was now heavily shadowed. “Are we going to be okay walking back in the dark?”
Cooper motioned towards his backpack. “It’s a short, easy walk, and I brought flashlights, but you’re probably right. We should head back soon.” He got up from his seat at the picnic table and began to gather the various items he’d unpacked.
Riese’s lips pursed. She didn’t want the evening to end, but tomorrow was a weekday which meant work for her and school for Syrah. Also, she hadn’t packed “staying over” clothes for Syrah or a toothbrush, so she’d need to be picked up from Cooper’s sister then brought home and settled in.
