This thought is sweet,
That you’re so true and complete,
And I’m a lie and a cheat.
Yet tell me, did your heart ever find rest,
Did you ever feel, deep in your chest,
That even when wrong, you wore pride’s grand crest?
Looking down on others with disdain so cold,
Did you truly think you won this hold,
And all the rest of us lost our fold?
Is your victory bound by this earthly span?
No… because your mind is as narrow as the plan,
Of your endless desires that outran
The very soul of the human man,
Whom you left behind where the race began.
You forgot that for you, more than anyone near,
That human inside was your soul held dear.
When you ever set out for peace to seek,
Just turn back and meet yourself, mild and meek;
Perhaps in that moment, your eyes will see,
What years of your blindness hid from thee.
Yes… you have lost the beautiful soul in you,
The one that was tender, the one that was true.

Author's Note
Writing poetry is an act of stripping away the noise to look directly at the fragile, complicated truth of what it means to be human. Pieces like this take time, vulnerability, and a lot of quiet moments of reflection to bring to the page.
