Mexican Ruins + a Pre-Order Discount Today

Last week I was in Mexico City, and I had the chance to visit Teotihuacan, the great pre-Aztec city that lies to the northeast. I posted a few photos from it on Instagram and Facebook, and a friend commented on how much it made him think of Machu Picchu and my second novel, The Next One to Fall. To be honest, wandering around Teotihuacan’s pyramids and stone serpents made my imagination spiral, much like Machu Picchu did. While I don’t have imminent plans to set a novel in Teotihuacan, never say never. In the meantime, I thought I’d share it with you!

First, a little bit about the site: the Aztecs revered Teotihuacan, but they didn’t build it. Little is known about the civilization that did; anthropologists don’t even know what to call them. Teotihuacan was abandoned by the year 750 with a significant part of it destroyed (not by invaders, either; archaeologists believe it was an internal uprising against its ruling class, since only their homes were burned). The Aztecs eventually took over the site and the names we use for the pyramids and everything else came from them.

Here’s the Temple of the Moon. This is the only pyramid tourists are allowed to climb, and you know that I did! It’s insanely steep, so there’s a rope to keep adventurers from falling to an untimely demise (I didn’t use it on the way up, but I definitely used it on the descent):

Beautiful, right? I’m not sure that there’s anything I love better than free-ranging over an ancient archaeological site.
