I Got Rid of 80% of My Kids' Toys

Not to be dramatic, but I wouldn’t start buying more organizing bins to get organized. It’s exactly where most people start, and well, I did too.

You don’t need another trip to Target.

You don’t need 47 matching baskets.

And you definitely don’t need to spend your Saturday afternoon organizing the stuff that’s making you crazy.

Start by getting rid of some of it!

Pick one place in your house that is driving you absolutely insane.

A drawer.
A cabinet.
A shelf.
The junk closet you avoid opening.

And then stop thinking about it.

Just start.

For me, it was a sideboard cabinet in our dining room was completely full of toys.

I could barely open the door without things falling out.

And the worst part?

My kids didn’t even play with most of it.

I don’t even know how we got to that point. It was just one of those spaces that slowly filled up until suddenly there was SO. MUCH. STUFF.

And I didn’t know where to start because toys are the worst. There are tiny pieces. Sets. Little cars. Random little things you don’t even know what they belong to.

I was ready to strike a match and walk away.

But eventually I got to the point where I was done.

So I pulled everything out.

And I got rid of about 80% of it.

And something happened that I didn’t expect...

When my kids saw the cabinet,

they were thrilled.

Not sad.

Not upset that I had gotten rid of some of their stuff.

They thought it was Christmas morning!

They found toys they actually loved.

Toys they had completely forgotten about.

Toys they hadn’t seen in forever.

And that’s when it really clicked for me:

They didn’t need more toys. They needed less stuff.

The things they actually love was buried under everything they didn’t.

And I think we do this all over our homes.

We buy more containers.
We reorganize.
We make piles.

But sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t have a good enough system.

You just have too much stuff.

When you remove what you don’t use, don’t need, and don’t love, the things you actually want to keep finally have room to be seen. To be used!

That’s what simplifying your home is really about.

Not making everything perfect.

Not having a Pinterest-worthy pantry.

Just making room for the things that actually matter and making spaces functional.

So don’t go buy the containers yet.

Pick one small space today.

One drawer. One cabinet. One shelf.

Get rid of what doesn’t belong.

You’ll be surprised by how much better the whole room feels afterward.

And if you have one space in your house that makes you want to strike a match and walk away

I want to hear about it!
