The 18th Annual Walter Camp Breakfast of Champions Is Tomorrow!

Tomorrow’s the day! We are less than 24 hours from the 18th Walter Camp Breakfast of Champions at Mohegan Sun casino, where Connecticut high school and college football players and coaches will be honored for their accomplishments. This is one of the biggest events of the year in Connecticut athletics and you don’t want to miss the opportunity to hear from great speakers and watch coaches and athletes be awarded for their hard work.

This years esteemed master of ceremonies is going to be Joe Zone of WFSB. Joe has been the Sports Director at Eyewitness Sports since 2006 after spending time working in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Chicago.

Along with having a fantastic master of ceremonies, there are a lot of great awards to look forward.

This years Connecticut High School Football Player of the Year, the three finalists are Windsor QB AJ Robinson, who led his team to a Class MM state title with a 23-13 win over Bunnell, Killingly RB Hayden Allard, who was a finalist for the award last year, but was beat out by Ansonia running back Quintez Whittle, and New Canaan wide receiver Andrew Esposito, who was influential in New Canaan winning this years Class L state championship over Cheshire.

Another major award is Connecticut High School Football Coach of the Year. This years finalists are Erik Becker of Daniel Hand who led the Tigers to a 12-1 record and a 37-13 win over Killingly High School, New Canaan’s Lou Marinelli who led New Canaan to an undefeated 13-0 record and a 34-14 win over Cheshire in the Class L state championship game, and Sheehan’s John Ferrazi who was able to lead the Titans to an 11-2 record this past season and Class S championship with a 21-7 win over Northwest Catholic.

This years Inspiration Award presented by NFP Sports is honoring Nonnewaug High School offensive lineman Jonathan Cheung. Jonathan was diagnosed with leukemia prior to Nonnewaug appearing in the Class SS playoffs. NFP Sports was able to interview Jonathan’s teammates and coaches and are excited to honor such a brave individual.

Every year at the Walter Camp Breakfast of Champions, the foundation honors former Connecticut high school football players who excelled at the next level. This year, two players join the ranks of Dwight Freeney, Dan Orlovsky, Niko Koutouvides, Zach Allen, and Tyler Booker as they will receive the Connecticut College Players of the Year.

On the offensive side of the ball, former UConn running back and current Michigan State running back, Cam Edwards will be taking home the award. In 2025, Edwards rushed for 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns. Edwards played his high school football at Norwalk High School.

On the opposite side of the ball is former Northwestern and North Carolina State and current Michigan State linebacker, Kenny Soares Jr. Soares, who played his high school football at Avon Old Farms, was a force on the Wolfpack defense in 2025 tallying 80 tackles, 2 pass breakups, and 1 fumble recovery.

A few other awards being presented are the Joseph W. Kelly Award, which honors the number one team high school football team in the state of Connecticut, the Lifetime Achievement Award which will be given to legendary Seymour High School football coach, Paul Sponheimer, and the Inspiration Award.
