Sheffield prisons and prisoners

It may be surprising that unlike other similar sized cities Sheffield doesn’t have (and never has had) a full-sized prison. It’s not as if we don’t have ample space, especially around the outskirts of town, and an occasional history of rebellious behaviour too - but for a long time serious crimes in Sheffield would result in the convicted being imprisoned elsewhere, often in York. There was a time though when one could be locked up in Sheffield, other than a night in the police cells - this was before organised police, and when being detained was as likely to be for debt as for any misbehaviour. So who was locked up in the old town, by whom, and where? This is rather distant history, and none of the buildings survive - so we are reliant on the maps, plans, and written accounts of the time to tell an interesting historical tale.
