From the archive: Radford Street

A straight forward enough location to identify from the street signs - but otherwise it’s not easily recognised today; the junction of Radford Street to the left and Upper Allen Street. This part of the Netherthorpe area inside the current ring road is one I’ve taken a couple of looks at before, as the street layouts are mostly still there - but with stark differences. I also like a nice corner shop, but it’s a pity this one has not survived as a house as is often the case. Painted advertisements are always a positive for me too, and Stones were a common (and large) feature on walls of the time - nowadays we have street art/graffiti instead, which is a matter of personal taste. There is a finely stacked display in the shop window, and I would like to take a look inside (photos of the inside of shops are that much rarer in the archive). Most of all there is a rare street feature in view, something that I’ve only found four or five examples of in old photos; a lamp which has the street names on it. These seem to have been placed on street corners with both names lit, even though the regular street name signs are right behind the lamp. With no people or transport in view it’s all about the shop and the street furniture - which suits me just fine!
