Facilitating a meeting begins the moment someone walks in.

A warm greeting, a clear role introduction, and a simple check-in question lower threat, establish leadership, and activate engagement.

I tell people my name and then say:

And, if there’s no objection, they’re implicitly consenting to your leadership role.

If people are arriving slowly I’ll ask each individual a quick question when we meet. This can be as simple as ‘how was your journey?’

If most people arrive together I’ll still make a point to individually greet each person with a compliment and an introduction.

And I’ll save the question for a group check-in, where everyone takes a moment to answer a question or two in turn.

Questions pull people out of autopilot and into focused thinking.

They’re also more likely to speak throughout the meeting if they’ve spoken at the start of it.
