The transparent liquid code flooded the chamber floor, pooling around Alyx's boots. She cursed under her breath, watching H4RE's distinctive marker—white code threaded with pink tracers—bounce through the Rift's digital maze. Her neural interface caught the program's panicked muttering:

"The Crimson Regent! She'll fragment my consciousness if she discovers my breach! Where could I have dropped those access keys?"

Alyx realized H4RE was searching for the gloves and security fan she'd spotted earlier. She scanned the surrounding data structure, but everything had reconfigured since her plunge in the emotional data pool. The glass-code terminal with its access portal had completely dissolved.

She'd barely taken three steps when H4RE's algorithm detected her. Its white code formation spun toward her, pulsing with agitation.

"You there! Maintenance subroutine!" it transmitted in sharp bursts. "Return to your assigned node immediately and retrieve my system privileges and heat-sink fan! Execute now!"

The command hit Alyx's neural implant with unexpected force. Authority signatures surged through her consciousness, triggering compliance protocols. Before she could explain the misidentification, she found herself running in the direction H4RE had indicated.

"It tagged me as a maintenance program," she subvocalized into her personal log. "How will it react when it discovers I'm an autonomous netrunner? Though I should probably recover those system items if I want to gain its trust."

She approached a digital dwelling with "W. RABBIT" engraved on its gleaming access panel. Bypassing security, Alyx slipped inside and quick-climbed to the upper data sectors, constantly monitoring for detection.

"This whole situation is bizarre," Alyx commented to her inactive comm link. "Taking orders from a rogue algorithm shaped like a rabbit? I wonder if Cipher will believe this when I report back." She chuckled. "Maybe next I'll be running errands for Dr. Yix's experimental AIs!"

She located what appeared to be a private data storage space with a floating interface terminal. On the terminal lay a sophisticated cooling fan and several pairs of white system-access gloves. She carefully collected the fan and one pair of gloves.

Just as she turned to leave, she noticed a small, unmarked container near the data mirror. Curiosity overriding caution, Alyx approached and initiated access protocols.

"Something interesting always happens when I integrate unmarked code," she reasoned. "With any luck, it'll restore my avatar to full size."

The effects were immediate and dramatic. Her avatar began rapidly expanding, her digital presence ballooning until she pressed uncomfortably against the node's ceiling. Alyx frantically attempted to halt the integration, but the process had already triggered.

"Excessive expansion parameters!" she gasped, manually decreasing her height protocols. "I hope my growth stabilizes soon. At this rate, I won't even fit through the exit!"

Within moments, Alyx found herself forced to kneel as her avatar approached the architectural limits of the node. Another minute passed, and even this position became untenable. With growing desperation, she wedged one arm against the exit port and folded her other arm around her processing core.

"System stabilize, please stabilize," she pleaded as her consciousness stretched beyond comfortable parameters. She extended one arm through the viewing port and pushed one foot up through the auxiliary ventilation channel. "This is maximum extension. How will I navigate out of this predicament?"

Mercifully, the code package finally completed integration, and her expansion halted—though she remained uncomfortably oversized. The painful compression against her neural pathways made her long for the familiar comforts of her system back in Axiom Delta.

"The netrunner life was simpler at home," she reflected miserably, "without these size fluctuations and strange programs issuing commands."

Her thoughts were interrupted by H4RE's voice: "Maintenance subroutine! Where are my system privileges? Execute retrieval immediately!"

Alyx tensed as she heard approaching footsteps. She momentarily forgot that her current size rendered H4RE essentially harmless—her code had expanded to nearly a thousand times the rabbit program's dimensions.

H4RE reached the access panel and attempted authentication, but Alyx's compressed arm blocked the inward-opening door. From outside, she heard H4RE mutter: "System locked. Initiating alternative access through viewing port."

As H4RE approached the transparency zone, Alyx quickly extended her hand outward. She heard a small system alert followed by a cascading failure sound that suggested H4RE had fallen.

"P4T! P4T! Identify your location and parameters!" H4RE's distorted voice called out.

An unfamiliar voice responded: "Active and present! Processing routine maintenance on graphical elements, administrator!"

"Graphical element maintenance, negative priority!" H4RE responded with frustration. "Execute immediate assistance protocol! Location compromised!"

"Identify compromised elements in viewing port," H4RE demanded.

"Visual assessment indicates extended avatar component, administrator!" P4T responded hesitantly.

"Avatar component? Improbable assessment!" H4RE's transmission escalated. "Extended components of this scale violate standard parameters!"

"Accurate assessment, administrator, but visual confirmation indicates avatar extension," P4T insisted.

"Unauthorized presence detected. Execute immediate removal protocol!" H4RE commanded.

After a heavy silence and whispered exchanges, Alyx extended her hand again through the viewing port. This time she registered two small alert sounds and additional system failures.

"Structural integrity compromised in multiple architecture zones," came P4T's assessment. "Significant data loss probability."

Eventually, Alyx detected the sound of equipment being processed followed by technical discussion as the programs debated their approach. A sudden crash interrupted the chatter, followed by silence.

When she heard a small program initiating ventilation protocols, Alyx positioned her foot strategically. She felt a faint scratching sensation as the program approached, then applied just enough force to repel the intruder.

The aftermath was a chorus of system alerts followed by H4RE's voice: "Bill's signal lost! Locate and recover!"

After a period of chaotic exchange, a weakened transmission emerged from Bill: "Operational status uncertain—system shock detected—unexpected force application with ballistic trajectory—"

"Execute habitation node destruction protocol," H4RE commanded suddenly. "This location is compromised."

Alyx called out with maximum transmission strength: "Any destruction attempts will trigger Cipher.Shift security protocols!"

Complete silence descended, until she heard H4RE whisper: "Initiate minimal resource solution. Single data packet should suffice initially."

Alyx soon detected light pattering against the viewing port—small fragments of code striking the transparency. She realized: "They're sending fragments of disassembly code to break down my position!"

As she observed more carefully, Alyx noticed the code fragments were transforming into small executable functions that glowed with potential energy.

"If those code fragments can transform, they might help reduce my size!" With careful movements, she consumed one of the glowing fragments. The transformation was immediate—her avatar began compressing at a manageable rate.

Delighted with this solution, Alyx quickly consumed additional fragments. As soon as she reached suitable proportions, she executed a rapid exit, departing through the door just as H4RE and its team assembled outside.

The small collection of programs scattered in surprised disarray, but Alyx didn't pause to engage. Instead, she accelerated through the digital environment, finding cover in a densely coded section of The Rift.

"My primary objective now," she told herself, "is to restore my normal operational parameters and then locate that garden simulation I glimpsed earlier."

As she navigated the unfamiliar digital landscape, scanning the intricate architecture and shifting network paths, Alyx realized the challenge ahead was far more complex than she had anticipated.
