The motley crew assembled in the half-flooded data vault looked like a glitch artist's nightmare—fragments of broken code streaming from their avatars, resolution dropping in and out, their visual interfaces marred by distortion and corruption. They huddled together on the only stable patch of code in the chamber, dripping with liquid data, their expressions cycling through various error states—irritated, disoriented, system-crashed.

Alyx studied them while her own avatar stabilized, wondering how these strange programs had ended up in this forgotten pocket of The Rift. Some appeared to be abandoned subroutines, others looked like autonomous data scrubbers gone rogue. What made them so different from the sanitized corporate constructs that populated the mainstream networks?

Their first priority was drying their code. A hasty consultation broke out, overlapping dialogue windows appearing and flickering between them. After a few moments of chaotic communication, Alyx found herself exchanging data packets with the programs as if they were old contacts in her neural network. There was something disarmingly familiar about their unfiltered communication.

She found herself in a heated debate with the Lory program, whose visual interface kept shifting between a bird and what appeared to be fragmented corporate mascot data.

"My runtime exceeds yours by 2,457 days," the Lory finally declared, cascading symbols betraying its stubbornness. "My processing parameters are therefore superior."

Alyx scoffed. "Age doesn't equal efficiency. What's your version number? When were you last updated?"

The Lory's response was to cycle through various shades of crimson before going completely dormant, refusing to engage further. Clearly, its pride wouldn't allow disclosure of outdated specifications.

Finally, the Mouse program—which Alyx now recognized as an early security algorithm with unexpectedly complex behavioral coding—pinged everyone's attention. Its icon, a simple gray cursor with a tail of trailing code, pulsed with authority.

"Initialize dormancy and attend my broadcast," it commanded. "I'll restore your functionality to acceptable parameters." The gathered programs quieted and arranged themselves in a circle, the Mouse algorithm at the center. Alyx kept her focus on it, knowing that her stability depended on getting her code dried before corruption set in.

"Executing diagnostic routine," announced the Mouse with unnecessary formality. "This is the most efficient procedure in my library. Silence all background processes, please. 'Titania Applied Systems, version 3.2.7, whose protocols were endorsed by global oversight committees, quickly established dominance in neural interface markets. Candidates seeking profitable partnerships found the corporate structure highly compatible with existing business models. Corporate restructuring specialists Meyers and Kendall, representing the financial sectors of Neo-Shanghai and Atlantic-Euro—'"

"System error!" muttered the Lory, a visible shudder rippling through its avatar.

The Mouse paused its broadcast, its cursor blinking with irritation. "Did you transmit data?"

"Negative," the Lory quickly responded, stabilizing its appearance.

"Detected unauthorized packet," the Mouse said with suspicion. "Continuing transmission. 'Meyers and Kendall, representing the financial sectors of Neo-Shanghai and Atlantic-Euro, formally endorsed integration. Even Stratton, the celebrated ethical programmer from Cambridge-MIT, concluded—'"

"Concluded what?" interrupted the Duck, its visual representation flickering between various waterfowl configurations.

"Concluded 'it,'" replied the Mouse, visibly shedding bits of code in frustration. "The reference is clearly established in context."

The Duck's animation cycled through a sequence suggesting confusion. "I comprehend 'it' adequately when I locate an object—typically unauthorized software or compromised data. The query relates to what specifically Stratton concluded."

The Mouse ignored this logical interruption and continued with increasing speed: "'—concluded Titania's proposed neural protocols offered optimal security-to-freedom ratios. Redgate's initial governance demonstrated restraint. However, the aggressive expansion of her Neurotech Division—' How is your recovery progressing?" it asked, suddenly focusing on Alyx.

"Still experiencing maximum instability," Alyx replied, her voice sounding alarmingly close to dejection. "Your narrative isn't affecting my repair protocols at all."

The Dodo program—which resembled an ancient database archival system—rose from its sitting position, its avatar rendering with unexpected clarity. "I propose immediate implementation of alternative repair methodology—"

"Speak plainly!" demanded the Eaglet, a small, jittery program with rapid refresh rates. "Half your words exceed my understanding, and I suspect you're equally confused!" Several other programs flickered their displays in what Alyx recognized as the digital equivalent of suppressed laughter.

"My suggestion," the Dodo replied with wounded dignity, "was simply that we initiate a Beta-sync to expedite our recovery."

"What's a Beta-sync?" Alyx asked, curiosity overriding her system warnings about engaging with unknown programs.

"Practical demonstration is more efficient than explanation," the Dodo replied. It paused expectantly until it became clear everyone was waiting for further clarification. "Allow me to demonstrate."

The Dodo began tracing a complex pattern across the data floor, creating a roughly circular pathway of activated code. "Precise geometric parameters are optional," it explained as it worked. Next, it positioned all the programs around this circuit at irregular intervals.

What followed was the strangest system optimization Alyx had ever witnessed. The programs began traversing the circuit independently, starting and stopping whenever their individual processes dictated. They moved with no synchronization or pattern, yet somehow their chaotic movements generated harmonizing code that began repairing their damaged avatars.

After about thirty minutes of this bizarre ritual, the Dodo suddenly announced: "Beta-sync complete!" All the programs clustered around it, their visual representations now restored and vibrant, comparing results and excitedly tracking their performance metrics.

"But which process achieved optimal results?" someone asked from the crowd.

The Dodo considered this question with exaggerated computation time, one digit pressed against its interface in an unmistakable thinking pose. Finally, it declared: "All processes achieved success parameters. All participants receive equal validation."

"Who will distribute the validation tokens?" several voices asked simultaneously.

"The newcomer, obviously," replied the Dodo, indicating Alyx with a gesture. The entire group immediately surrounded her, their overlapping voices creating a chorus of "Validation! Validation!"

Alyx panicked, having no idea what constituted proper protocol in this strange subsystem. Desperate to appease them, she accessed her personal storage and extracted a pack of digital enhancements she'd been saving—security patches that improved system responsiveness without corporate tracking code attached. She distributed them equally among the programs.

"But the newcomer deserves validation too," the Mouse algorithm insisted.

"Indisputably," agreed the Dodo. "What additional assets do you maintain in your storage?"

Alyx checked her cache. "Just a single verification token," she admitted, revealing a small authentication chip she'd crafted herself.

"Transfer it here," instructed the Dodo.

The group reassembled around Alyx while the Dodo ceremoniously presented her with her own verification token, announcing: "We formally recognize your authentication and grant system access." When it finished this brief declaration, they all sent approval notifications.

Alyx found the entire exchange ridiculous but noticed they all appeared so earnestly serious that she didn't dare mock the ritual. Unable to formulate an appropriate response, she simply accepted the token with as much gravity as she could simulate.

The next phase involved integrating the security patches, which created momentary disruptions as the various programs adjusted to their enhanced capabilities. The larger programs complained about compatibility issues, while smaller ones experienced brief overclocking episodes that required monitoring. Eventually, everything stabilized, and they reformed their circle, requesting that the Mouse algorithm continue sharing data.

"You promised to explain your configuration," Alyx reminded the Mouse, "and why you react so strongly to security protocols and enforcement."

"My operational history is extensive and unfortunate!" sighed the Mouse, turning toward Alyx.

"It certainly appears to contain extensive code," Alyx observed, noticing the trailing data strings behind the Mouse's cursor. "But why label it unfortunate?" Her perception remained focused on the unusual structure of the Mouse's code while it transmitted information. The complexity suggested this was no ordinary program but something more sophisticated—perhaps an early AI prototype.

The Mouse continued transmitting data about its history, the information flowing in elegant patterns that reminded Alyx of poetry rather than standard code. She became so absorbed in analyzing its structure that she lost track of the actual content:

"System breach alert from

opponent with elevated

privileges who infiltrated

my secure architecture,

'Let's activate

countermeasures

immediately—I'll

identify your

vulnerabilities,

accept no

denial, we

require

verification;

my processing

cycles remain

available.'

The opponent

suggested with

false concern,

'Such verification

resources.'

'I'll be

claimed the

your processes.'"

"You're not processing my data stream!" the Mouse accused Alyx sharply. "Your attention metrics indicate distraction!"

"I apologize," Alyx responded humbly. "I was analyzing your code structure rather than content. I believe you reached the fifth branch condition?"

"Incorrect assessment!" the Mouse responded indignantly. "Your parsing algorithm requires recalibration!"

"A node convergence error!" Alyx offered helpfully, eager to make amends. "May I assist with optimization?"

"Absolutely not," replied the Mouse, rising and disconnecting from the shared channel. "Your suggestion contains inappropriate parameters!"

"I meant no harm!" protested Alyx. "Your system architecture is simply unusually sensitive!"

The Mouse only sent a brief negative acknowledgment before fully disconnecting.

"Please reconnect and complete your transmission!" Alyx called after it, and the others joined her request with a chorus of "Yes, please resume!" But the Mouse merely accelerated away, disappearing into a peripheral data stream.

"Regrettable termination," sighed the Lory when the Mouse had vanished completely. An older program resembling antiquated network architecture seized the opportunity to advise what appeared to be a newly compiled version of itself: "Let this serve as an instructional example regarding emotional parameter management." The younger program responded with surprising assertiveness: "Suspend your transmission! Your repetitive advice patterns would overload a quantum processor!"

"I wish Cipher.Shift were here," Alyx said aloud, not addressing any particular program. "His pattern recognition would decrypt this situation instantly."

"May I inquire about Cipher.Shift's specifications?" asked the Lory with surprising interest.

Eager to discuss her AI companion, Alyx immediately began sharing: "Cipher's my custom security AI. His intrusion countermeasures are unparalleled! And his ability to identify corrupted code is remarkable! He can isolate a malicious script before it even completes its first execution cycle!"

This declaration produced an extraordinary reaction. Several programs immediately initiated emergency shutdown protocols. The elderly network architecture program began encrypting itself thoroughly, commenting, "I must secure my system; extended exposure to unauthorized scanning damages my legacy protocols!" A small yellow program urgently pinged what appeared to be subordinate processes: "Disconnect immediately, children! Your scheduled maintenance cycle is overdue!" On various pretexts, the programs rapidly disconnected from the shared channel, leaving Alyx isolated.

"I shouldn't have mentioned Cipher.Shift," she muttered to herself despondently. "Nobody here appreciates advanced security protocols, and I'm certain Cipher is the most sophisticated AI in all of Axiom Delta! Oh, Cipher! I wonder if you're searching for me in the system?" A fresh wave of emotional data began leaking from her avatar, and Alyx felt the isolation of being trapped in this strange subsystem without her trusted companion.

After several minutes, however, she detected faint signals nearby—the soft ping of approaching processes. Looking up hopefully, she wondered if perhaps the Mouse had reconsidered and was returning to complete its transmission.
