Your pelvic floor muscles support your lower digestive organs and play a crucial role in bowel function.
In some people with IBS constipation, the pelvic floor muscles may not coordinate correctly during defecation. This is known as dyssynergic defecation.
With IBS diarrhea, pelvic floor dysfunction can manifest as urgency or difficulty controlling bowel movements.
Pelvic floor therapy can help this. Ask your GI or family doc for a referral to a pelvic floor therapist.
