“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30, NIV)
Ever feel like you are holding onto something you don’t need to hold on to? This could be emotions, physical things, memories, or past actions. Whatever it is, this “thing” has a hold on you, where you feel like it needs to be present in your life when, in reality, God’s been asking you to let go of it for a long time.
This week, that happened to me. It was a feeling I let go of; that’s all: a feeling that I no longer needed to feel because it wasn’t serving me in any capacity, and in reality, was causing me grief and confusion. As I was scrolling through my Bible app, a prayer popped up, something to the effect of: “Lord, help me to let go of things that don’t need to be in my life. Let me give that thing to you to take care of.” It felt like the voice of God speaking to me right there.
Of course, it’s easy to imagine objects, people, or places when we think of “things.” But for me, it was letting go of a feeling; a hurt, a confused feeling. Yet, if my focus is on God and his absolute and total care for me, it doesn’t matter what my feelings are or who’s treating me badly. None of that matters. Because he’s the only one that can actually understand and take care of my feelings.
Just reading those two simple sentences about letting go of feeling that doesn’t belong in my life healed me and filled me with hope. I can let God take care of this! If there is something in your life, a situation, a mistake, a feeling, or a person that insists on reminding you to feel badly, it’s time to kick it into the hands of God. He’s been waiting to take your pain.
Finch Food for Thought: I don’t need to solve my problems when I have a God who’s always waiting for me to place my problems at His feet.
