My brothers and I have a group text.

We’re three time zones and two countries apart. But the group text keeps us connected.

Especially when our teams play.

Turns out we’re not alone.

FIFA is projecting 6 billion people will watch some part of this World Cup. That’s not a typo.

In this post:

  • The findings from a study that surveyed almost 54,000 people about watching sports

  • Why watching sports is linked to happiness

  • The catch

A 2026 study asked almost 54,000 adults how often they watch sports in their free time.

People who watched sports reported higher happiness than people who never did. Even after controlling for income, education, marital status, and where they lived.

Why? Two things explained part of it. Watchers rated their own physical health somewhat higher. Watching was also tied to more trust in people and more time spent with friends.

No link to depression was found. The researchers guessed that the stress of a loss cancels out the joy of a win.

The effect was small. Not life-changing.

The catch

This is correlational. Happier people might just watch more sports. Even a study this size can’t rule that out.

The effect only showed up for men. Women: no significant link. That’s not just this study. A separate study of older adults found the same split: happiness gains were stronger for men than women.

Other research backs the direction. Higher life satisfaction, less loneliness. Stronger social connection. Across countries, across age groups. None of it proves watching causes happiness. And sedentary time and late-night matches could cancel out some benefits.

Whoever wins the final on the 19th — the people talking about it together already have won.

Facts, no fluff, watch the game - Heather
