Before I even officially closed on my house last year I knew one thing for sure: that I needed a canopy bed in my bedroom. The primary bedroom is much larger than the apartment-sized one I was used to, and a canopy felt like a wonderful way to create some division in the space, plus give us the dreamiest nook to sleep in. There are lots of ways to do canopy beds, I opted for these ceiling mounted curtain rods, and hung lace curtains from rings for easy closure on all four corners, and then two dusty blue floral curtains on the back to create an elongated headboard. We used a laser level to make sure everything was straight, drilled into the ceiling and that was that. Pretty simple!
Canopy beds are all over my Instagram and Pinterest feeds right now, but they have obviously been around for so long. My love for them goes back to childhood memories of playing with my American Girl Doll, Felicity from Colonial Virginia. She had the sweetest red plaid canopy over a four poster bed- my cat, Piglet loved to sleep in it . I suppose you could say that’s my original inspiration, but there is a particularly grand one at the Met Museum that I think about constantly. That one is suspended from the ceiling as well and dates back to the late 18th c.
I love having a bed canopy so much that now I’m thinking I might need to do one in my NYC apartment bedroom too. At one time they served a very practical purpose (keeping heat in) but even now there’s something very useful-feeling about them- it makes me feel extra safe when I sleep, like I’m in a protected little cocoon & keeps the good dreams in! Because of space concerns/not wanting the canopy to overwhelm the room, I probably won’t be able to do what I did at the house, so I’m thinking of something more like my friends, Claudia and Brigette did in their Brooklyn apartments:
They used this plexiglass kit, which comes in different widths depending on your bed size. I love how Claudia went with two different fabrics and Brigette left hers open in the back to be able to see the wallpaper. I think it’s so beautiful how they both chose to drape the curtains over sconces!
Should I do it?! I haven’t changed anything with this room in a while and it’s always felt a bit lackluster to me. Cats vote yes!
