Rebuilding after illness, Postpartum Depression and health anxiety. Whilst navigating first-time parenthood on one of the UK’s most iconic reality shows. *Trigger warning: This episode contains conversations about Postpartum Depression.

“I didn’t even know I could feel love this strong. I think it was so intense for me I felt like I could be sick!” reality TV star Sam Vanderpump shares with Gi in this week’s episode of Happy Mum! “We want to be authentic. We want to talk about everything. The ups, the downs!”

As reality TV stars on the iconic show Made in Chelsea, Sam and Alice are no strangers to the public spotlight. Audiences have been able to watch the couple from their chemistry-filled first dates right up to their intimate wedding day in 2025!

“I think we just had the respect for each other from day one,” Sam says, “we were going to give each other our full attention”.

The latest family milestone for the couple is, of course, the birth of their baby boy Duke!

Famous with their fans for their honesty and authenticity as a couple, Sam and Alice want to use their platform to keep audiences in the loop about parenting while shedding light on the struggles they have faced.

Alice describes the “emotional rollercoaster” of finding out she was pregnant amidst Sam’s longstanding battle with liver disease. “Life was quite scary”, she shares, as lots of the excitement of their pregnancy was overshadowed by frequent trips in and out of hospital.

Speaking about her C-section, Alice says, “the actual day was flawless”; she remembers the “euphoric moment” of hearing Duke’s voice for the first time and just melting! “He’s so perfect, I wish he was here so you could see his face! He’s so cute!”

Four months after the birth, she remembers waking up every day and feeling like she was really struggling, an experience she later realised was an early indicator of her Postpartum Depression …

“When I try and talk to people about it, I’m 24!” she says “I don’t have any friends really that have babies. People can’t relate. Sam can’t relate. He’s not been through this before, and I feel so alone.”

Sam and Alice really leaned on each other to get through such a difficult time, telling Gi that talking is absolutely crucial! “I feel like it’s so important that partners understand this more and be a bit more understanding of what women are going through,” Sam says, adding that “my favourite saying is this too shall pass!”

In true Made in Chelsea fashion, they want to carry on being “open and vulnerable” with their audience. Raising awareness around some of the difficulties of parenting and inspiring honest conversations around postnatal depression are absolute priorities for the couple who went back to filming just seven days after birth!

The response has been amazing! “I’ve probably had 500 messages in my DMs saying thank you for being honest and wonderful”, Alice says “These things are not that easy to talk about!”

Gi praises the couple’s bravery in speaking out about the nuances of postnatal depression, reminding everyone of the importance of “checking in with yourself and doing what you can to be kind”.

Five months into their parenting journey, Alice shares that motherhood has taught her what unconditional love actually is whilst Sam is simply at his happiest when Alice and Duke are happy.

Despite the rollercoaster that has been the last few years - they remain the bubbly, beautiful couple that audiences fell in love with, pledging to keep it real about the highs and lows of parenthood!
