Walrus Audio unveils its Canvas Expression Pedal, in the exact same format as the recent Volume edition - but in a warm grey colourway

Hot on the heels of the Canvas Volume Pedal, we now have a very similar Canvas Expression Pedal.

Of course the Canvas Expression Pedal has its own controls, to go along with full MIDI In and Out support, and dual - A + B Jacks - for the control of 2 different pedals.

The Canvas Expression panel controls are similar to its Volume sibling, but with different parameters covered.

There are in essence 4 colour-coded Parameters - with 1 | 2 | 3 assignable values for each - against Jack A or B. So both Jacks can be configured entirely differently. As certain pedals favour different expression standards, where the most popular format is 10K TRS.

The 4 Parameters

• TYPE (Yellow) : Expression Out / Switch Out / CV Out
• WIRE (Green) : TRS / RTS / TS
• DIRECTION (Red) : Forward / Reverse
• X-PRESSION (Magenta) : Switch Trigger Point : Heel Down / Middle / Toe Down

For me this is a relatively large Expression Pedal - being 225mm in length. I always say you need to find your own lane, and for my preference - the Black Mountain Expression pedal is perfect. It doesn’t quite have the same degree of granularity or standards compatibility but still handles the vast majority of pedals.

This is a quality build for sure - with smart features, and for sure some will lave the expanded controls you have here. While for others it will be a little much - in size, features and price. The Black Mountain Expression is $100 less, and much smaller - essentially having a length just a touch more than a compact pedal - while the Walrus Canvas one here is twice that length.

You need to decide whether you prefer a Scroll Wheel or a more conventional treadle. Chase Bliss also makes a Scroll Wheel edition - called the Expression Roller. For me the Black Mountain take is the most robust and tour-grade ready - with bullet-proof build quality and operation.

The Walrus Audio Canvas Expressions is a lot more technical - and requires a power supply too - where my favourite is passive. 

As I always say - you need to figure out what works best for you, what can most easily be accommodated within your rig, and how robust and reliable is it likely to me!

The Canvas Expression is undeniably cool - but is it the right choice for you?

Should be widely available now - where it goes for $299.99. I don’t understand why they just don’t quote $300. One Cent doesn’t make the slightest bit of a difference!
