Greg Vinci · Musings Of A Trout Bum

I’ve had an eventful week as my son Joe is visiting us for my birthday, which was yesterday. Thursday night, e took us out to an east Sac Italian restaurant that I’ve passed by at least a hundred times, named Alora. All I can say is that it was an amazing experience, as I have never experienced such perfectly choreographed service by a dining room staff, from the bartender to the server to the hostess. Food was exceptional too.

This week’s heat has slowed down fishing throughout the state, though those in the know (Old Trout Bum readers) realize that the fish haven’t gone anywhere, as they are only active early in the morning and late in the day. It’s a good thing to remember that when the water gets warm, the bug activity slows down too, so the fish get more interested in terrestrials and crawdads. Another thing to remember is that when the water is warm, the fish will congregate around springs and tributaries.

This issue of the newsletter has some interesting information about southern steelhead and plans for a gold mine at Hot Creek. I also posted a great video about night fishing for huge Browns.

If you haven’t already done so, check out the new line of 11 x 14 inch prints that I now have available. Click on the link and have a look.

NEWS OF INTEREST
Latest on Nor-Cal fishing:
Shad fishing is over, but there are still a lot of stripers in the tailwaters. If you haven’t fished for these behemoths, you don’t know what you’re missing. The CDFW has been busy planting. In addition to CDFW planting several of the counties, such as Alpine and Mono, have stocking programs too. Temperatures a re blistering here in the valley and in the 80s (which is hot) up in the Sierra; therefore, the good fishing is going to be before 11 am and after 4 pm. Try to avoid midday, as when the water is warm, the fish tire out easily and sometimes don’t survive.

Note that as the summer progresses many Sierra waters will warm up to temperatures that will stress caught fish. To find out which waters are affected, click below to keep up to date on Hoot Owl closures instituted by the CDFW and NDOW:

  • Nothing new this week, but there will be several events coming up as we get into summer.

My photo essay on Highway 395 fishing is in the current issue of Gray’s Sporting Journal. For an outdoor photographer, having a photo essay in Gray’s, is kind of a big deal.

The new issue of American Fly Fishing magazine is now on the racks, and it contains a series of images that I took on the San Juan which illustrate a story (not written by me) about the river and the fabulous Soaring Eagle Lodge located at river’s edge.
