In 2022, Governor Newsom was instrumental in the passage of California SB 846 (Dodd, 2022) which preserved the option for Diablo Canyon to run to at least 2030. We believe Newsom’s reputation as a consensus-builder would be enhanced by his signature on California legislation to extend DCPP operations at least until 2045. This would be an important legacy for Governor Newsom while the benefits of Diablo Canyon as a clean and firm generator that stabilizes the California grid frequency become clearer to more voters. The signs point to Governor Newsom being a U.S. presidential candidate in 2028.
