They have sunk so far into me that my character is changing. Something I thought impossible is not.

So much for a lifetime of habits. So I quit smoking after 60 years and nothing changed.

Summer Reading – The last two books I have read are “The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914,” by Margaret MacMillan and, most recently, Antony Beevor’s biography of Grigori Rasputin, “Rasputin: The Downfall of the Romanovs.” Both books take place during roughly the same period of history, the first 2 decades of the 20^th Century and the end of the 19^th Century. The Russian Empire under the Romanovs was, of course, a major subject of both books.

From reading both books, I came away with the conclusion that the respective leaderships of the “Great Powers,” as they were described at the time, consisted of idiots who, by a succession of dreadful decisions, eventually led Europe into the catastrophe of World War I. The “Great Powers” consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, France, and the Russian Empire. At the time, the crumbling Ottoman Empire became an object of the imperial desires of the other Great Powers.

The “dreadful decisions” consisted of territorial rivalries such as the 2 Moroccan crises largely between France and Germany, the Bosnian Crisis, between the Russian Empire and Austria Hungary, and Germany getting its “place in the sun,” describing its need for colonies in Africa and the South Pacific. There was also a military rivalry, the naval race between Great Britain and Germany, largely over which country could build the most capital ships, battleships and cruisers, that neither country could really afford.

In the case of the Russian Empire, during much of World War I Tsar Nicholas I outsourced his authority on matters of State to his wife, Alexandra, while he spent almost all his time at Army headquarters pretending to command the Russian Army in its losing fight against Germany and Austria-Hungary. In turn, Alexandria was outsourcing her authority over matters of State to Rasputin.

Rasputin did get one thing right – he pleaded with the Tsar not to declare war on Germany. However, at the time Rasputin was in a Siberian hospital recovering from an assassination attempt by a local peasant woman.

By reflecting on my summer reading, the situation in which the World finds itself today is eerily similar to where the World found itself in 1914, at the end of an 80-year period of relative peace with major powers being ruled by idiots. For example, just yesterday it was reported that President Trump spent 2 hours listening to the proceedings of the Board of Directors of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts when, among other things, the Board was debating the question of whether President Trump’s name should be put back onto the Kennedy Center façade. This, at a time when the United States is fighting a war with Iran, among other issues for which Americans elected President Trump to address.

As an anecdote to “The War That Ended Peace” and “Rasputin,” I am now reading “The Encyclopaedia Paranoica,” by Christopher Cerf and Henry Beard, former officers of the Harvard Lampoon. Additionally, Henry Beard was a co-founder of the National Lampoon.
