A Pitch for a Purple Summer.

One of my favorite newsletters I’ve written was curated entirely through the lens of light blue and red, the colors I started noticing everywhere and, coincidentally, make up the gr8 collab logo.

It’s still one of the pieces readers mention to me most often. So today, I’m doing it again. Whether you’ve already fallen for purple or you’re ready to be convinced, here’s my pitch for a purple summer.

Last fall, I got an email that I initially assumed was spam. Rivian’s Head of Communications wanted to chat about Art Basel. A few calls later, we had signed a contract for me to host a series of conversations at their Miami activation. Only after everything was finalized did they reveal what we were celebrating: the launch of Borealis, their new purple vehicle.

It felt like a sign. Of what, I couldn’t exactly tell you. But by that point, I had spent the previous three years collecting data points indicating that purple was somehow my good luck charm.

It started with a $12 bikini I bought in a pinch during a summer in Barcelona in 2022. Before then, I’d never thought much about purple. My favorite color was firmly set in shades of blue. I wore dark red nails. Purple wasn’t a color I reached for.

But every time I wore that bikini, strange things seemed to happen. There were more conversations with strangers, better days, and unexpected opportunities. My friend Emily and I started to joke that I’d unlocked “the purple effect.”

Eventually, I bought a purple sweater. A purple Kartell side table. A purple iPhone. I started adding purple manicures into my rotation. The line between coincidence and superstition became a bit blurry.

Then I started seeing purple everywhere.
