A good fronds era

I’ve been a little quiet on the Substack front of late, I could put it down to a combination of things: new job, health, lack of inspiration or even just the fact that it’s so. damn. hot. But in reality, I’ve felt disjointed from this space, from A Very Good Day. The truth is, I started this space as an exploration of creativity, without true direction or barriers. I’ve always been someone to move between interests and ideas, floating around with whatever takes my fancy when it comes to content, writing, and the like. However, in the last few years, my subtle interest in gardening has become a steadfast in my life, growing into a career change and a consistent in my day-to-day. No matter my other joys, seemingly they all weave together under the guise of the garden.

It feels like a good time to reframe A Very Good Day, and let it evolve into something that feels more natural for me to come to, where I am now in my life. So, with that, it’s time for a good fronds chapter to begin. A space to centre itself in and around the garden, notes on nature, lessons learnt, fascinations with plants and an account of my journey in pivoting my career to horticulture.

That’s not to say my reflections in other aspects of life won’t shine through within the writing, but I really wanted a space to root myself (please excuse the pun) and to develop the way I communicate about my deepest interest.

For once, I’ve tried my best not to overthink the next steps. As we all know, ideas slowly turn from excitement to anxiety, and that’s where in-action steps in. I think this time around I’m going to embrace the messy middle, so to speak and enjoy the return of energy to writing. That said, I have already scribbled a few drafts together, so as a taste, soon there will be some notes on plants I’ve been exploring, thoughts on a year into my career change and a few lessons learnt on renovating my own garden.

Thank you so much for supporting A Very Good Day, I’m so proud of so much that I had written on there, and I’m excited to see where the development of good fronds goes.
