When I created the Make Your Own Granny Square Coaster Kit, I wanted to provide a counterpoint for the “make your own” kits that I saw sold in local shops. I had gifted and been gifted a few myself - yet they were fiddly and the patterns were hard to follow.
I thought - I surely can make it easier.
So I created the Make Your Own Granny Square Coaster Kit.
The kit is a physical kit that can be purchased directly from me, for New Zealand only (postage internationally is prohibitive).
This page is for getting the most out of this kit. The tutorial is useful for anyone who wants to make their own granny square. For your own printout of the pattern provided in the kit, grab it from my store.

You can use your acrylic granny squares for decorative coasters - for use with cold drinks, pot plant holders, or other decorative uses.
If you make them with cotton yarn, then you can use them for hot drinks too.
If you combine two squares together and sew three edges, you will have a tiny bag that is great for ear buds, lip gloss and other tiny items.
Combine two granny squares, side by side, repeat with another two, then sew these together (as you did for the above project) and you will have a granny square pencil case/glasses case or other medium storage holder.
Keep going and make many granny squares, and you can make yourself a granny square blanket or cardigan.
The point of this kit is to get you started on what can be a lifelong hobby!
Once you become confident, there are so many variations you can make.
Once you’ve made your initial coasters, you can use your yarn hook and make a great many things!
With the 4mm hook that comes in the pack, you can buy 8 ply acrylic yarn and make my book cozy or storage pocket patterns. You could also buy 8 ply cotton yarn (I prefer cotton mixes to make them slightly easier to work with like cotton/nylon) and make book marks, coasters, mug cozies, cleaning cloths and more.
You could also get yourself a 5 mm hook and use 10 ply yarn to make a slightly chunkier version of each of the above.
