Once I had the basics of crochet down (I taught myself last year), in true Melissa form, I decided I needed to create a simple, replicable thing that I could finish quickly and in a flare.
Why? The pleasure of finishing something, even when I am stuck in my recliner.
The storage pocket is a perfect pattern to learn. It’s a simple rectangle, in a size that suits you, and it’s very forgiving.
They are great for gifts, keeping things safe and visible in your bag, containing your bedside essentials and more.
I made many in the quest to perfect the pattern.
Now, I continue to make them for my Christmas fairs and for Christmas gifts. Stay tuned for a post about how I am using them, coming soon.
They are a great project to practice before moving on to bigger projects, a great way to practice our stitches, work with colours and gather a little supply ready for occasions where you need a gift.
Basically, all of the patterns that I tried to follow as a beginner were not suitable. Trying to read patterns with all the abbreviations felt more like reading another language. Plus, I don’t want to have to closely follow a pattern or count. I would like my crochet to be mindless, please.

Once I got used to making the storage pockets, I started experimenting. I used colour changes, added ribbons and made a set. This set will be sold at my Christmas fair tables.
I have really enjoyed being able to take up a satisfying hobby, even when I’m chair-bound.
