Pittsburgh had quite the week - severe storms, air quality that made your eyes burn, and a bridge demolition. But more on that in a moment. First: I finally saw Tim McGraw live, and it was worth all my years of waiting.
Tim McGraw has been on my concert bucket list since July 1999, the summer I saw Faith Hill perform live in Michigan and decided - literally that month - that I wanted to be a singer. Decades later, seeing her husband did not disappoint.
It was nice to have that concert to look forward to because the rest of the week was a bit rough. I’ve been dealing with a traumatic situation in my apartment and haven’t slept here all week. I’m also in the middle of a sleep consolidation program for insomnia, which is basically intentional sleep deprivation to try and get the body back to a baseline of sleep consistency. Fun times!
The silver lining: I went out to eat with friends and family a ton this week, including two of my favorite local spots - Ruby’s Wine House and Palm Palm. Sometimes good people, good food, and the rare fancy cocktail can help to you carry you through.
Back to Tim McGraw… I can’t stop thinking about his performance.
His physicality was masterful. The pauses, the gestures, the way he held the room - he always gave his audience (and his photographer) something to hold on to. Only a true stage veteran moves that way. His presence and command of the stage were astonishing.
I’ve been noodling on what real presence actually looks like - and how all of us can bring more of it into our lives.
Sometimes presence means slowing down and truly listening, a la Mister Rogers. Sometimes presence means allowing yourself to be seen - embracing visibility and honoring the conversation between you, your body, and the people around you.
Presence isn’t something you either have or you don’t. It’s a skill that you can practice and develop. Tim McGraw has spent decades refining his magnetic presence on stage and screen.
It starts with a decision and a commitment to take up space - to show up, to open up, and to risk being seen and heard without apology.

Have a beautiful day!
Be well and sing on,

P.S. Whose presence do you admire? I’d love to know!
