Steve Levine · Getting Old Sucks

Aging is a requirement of grandparenthood. For starters, we have to grow old enough to have a child, adopt one, or marry someone who has one. Then, that child has to do the same.

The time needed to accomplish those two cycles and the age at which we start, vary tremendously. But I think I can safely say, becoming a grandparent happens when we are older or older than or old-ish if not yet quite old.

For me, it took 64 years. Since her birth, Princess Remy has been a constant source of joy and fun, a constant object of my love.

Yesterday, the grandparent thing happened again. Lindan was born. Remy’s baby sister. I wasn’t there when she arrived, but I got there as soon as I could. And on that precious child’s first day, I got to hold her and kiss her and love her.

So, yes. You have to get older to become a grandparent. And yes, as I share in these pages, many things about getting old suck.

But being Poppy to these two little girls definitely doesn’t suck.

It’s the anti-suck.

PS: Lindsey took this picture of Remy when she was about a year and a half. It’s the wallpaper on my phone. Whenever I feel the least bit sad, I pick up my phone and look at this face. Princess Remy takes my blues away!
