Let me start by saying I know almost nothing about the state of Maine, aside from the magical, whimsical, lovely content I’ve seen on the internet. I did go to Portland once for my cousin’s bachelorette party in October 2022, and I really loved it. But I’m not calling myself an expert. I’m actually saying the opposite. Let’s just say I know nothing about the state, but I’ve been dying to go back for years now.
But Maine seems to be calling me these days. Slow living. Art. Books. Nature. It’s filling my Substack and Instagram feeds, and I might just have to bump the state to the top of my travel wish list.
As a kid, I was really into the book Blueberries for Sal, and I only recently realized it’s set in the Maine countryside. Perhaps a Maine vacation has been in the books for me (pun intended) all along.
If I were to plan a Maine trip now, here’s what would be on my list. And I cannot emphasize this enough: THESE ARE NOT RECOMMENDATIONS. I’m just sharing my hopes and dreams with you.
Blueberry picking, which seems to last from late June through early September
Cape Elizabeth because it’s beautiful and Noah Kahan says so
Consuming as many lobster rolls as possible in the name of science
Eating even more seafood on a hop of my own making
Acadia National Park because it’s stunning and seems like a must
Visiting the L.L. Bean headquarters because it just feels right
This new bookstore called Upstairs Books that opened at the beginning of August
I mean it when I say I want to consume all the Maine content I can this fall. I have no idea when I’m visiting. It may even be in 2027. Or 2028. I’m a mom now, and life is busy! But when I do go, you’ll hear all about it.
You’re here, and I’m so grateful you are.
xx
