Gerry Wilson · Stories I'm Old Enough to Tell

Back so soon? You’re probably asking, since I tend to go a longish time between posts. But something happened yesterday that warrants introspection, so I thought I would reflect on it here. Maybe it’s worth sharing; maybe it will resonate with you, too.

Last night, my husband and I went to a vocal performance sponsored by Mississippi Opera. (Yes, we do have “the arts” here in Mississippi.) This wasn’t a full-scale production; it was two talented people in a small, beautiful venue. They presented a program of “sacred” music that ranged from Webber’s “Pie Jesu” to spirituals like “Steal Away” and “Ride On, King Jesus.” Late yesterday afternoon, I had been tempted to say, “No, let’s not go, it’s too much trouble.” It was the eve of my birthday, which I sometimes feel isn’t much to celebrate these days. But we went, and I’m glad we did.

Both singers were excellent, but the one who attracted us to the program is a young man we “sort of” know; he sang in our church choir for a while, before his budding vocal career took him elsewhere. The superb range of his voice echoes a range of emotions, from sweet and tender to powerful. Besides his talent, his vibrant spirit shone in every song. There was one piece toward the end of the program, though—a song about grace—that he could hardly get through for his tears. I cried along with him. I know, I know. It may be hard to imagine if you aren’t as deeply moved by music as I am. Let’s just say you needed to be there; words can hardly do his gorgeous, emotional performance—or my vulnerable response—justice.

It occurred to me while I was listening to him sing that piece, one I had never heard before, that “grace” is a good word for the time of life I’m living: think “grace period,” think “gift,” the “extra” in our lives, the time we didn’t expect, the relationships beyond any we might have dreamed up for ourselves. That is where I am on this birthday: in a state of wonder.

How can it be, all those years of living behind me and maybe not much ahead? Regardless, I’m feeling blessed today, a recipient of grace beyond measure.

Peace, y’all.

Coda: the photo of a sparrow reminds me of the beauty and complexity of simple things—and of singing!
