A Deadpool Reunion, Star Trek & My DC Comics SDCC '26 Schedule

Writers are always keeping secrets. We clock in every day on a future we hope comes to pass, and for the last year, I’ve really been toiling on multiple futures that I hope see the light of day. These projects are for print and screen. All we can do is our best work while being as easy-going as possible. It’s exciting. It’s new. I’m grateful for my collaborators. I hope to have some news sooner rather than later.

This past weekend I dropped into New York a couple of days ahead of a family visit to reunite with Reilly Brown, one of the best Deadpool creators to ever do it and join Ryan Reynolds at the Javits for Fanatics Fest. It’s just like NYCC except the Knicks are there. Ryan dropped a bomb on stage, announcing another Deadpool film:

Ryan’s the rare breed that doesn’t view credit as a finite resource. He went to great lengths to make sure that when Deadpool & Wolverine premiered the red carpet had comics creators on it. (You’re welcome Getty Images) This weekend that meant a reunion at the Javits celebrating Topps’ Deadpool business.

Ryan, yours truly, Reilly and a woman planning a near-future creator-owned comics takeover, Victoria Mitzelfeld. Fans were asked to draw a Deadpool card as though it were going to be included in a future Topps pack, and there were a lot of great efforts, and Victoria took the top spot.

While we’re on the subject of Canadians near and dear to my heart, another project that Ryan had a hand in was Colin Hanks’ excellent doc JOHN CANDY I LIKE ME.

This film is a direct hit on my battleship, as some of my struggles were also John’s but you don’t need any of that baggage (those aren’t pillows) to enjoy this one. The highest compliment I can give it is that you’re getting a new John Candy film many years after his untimely passing and you get to enjoy it guilt free because it’s being made by people who genuinely loved him and without ghoulishly summoning John with A.I. The family shared themselves and their private footage, and at the end you feel like we all got to go to some lovely family reunion. The interviews are funny and heartbreaking, like John — and Ryan conducted the interview with Bill Murray. Worth nothing: it’s the most human and vulnerable, and really the best interview I’ve seen with Bill, and that includes anything Letterman got out of the man. No small feat. John was special, and this doc is, too. I’ll be revisiting it again this year after my annual Planes Trains & Automobiles rewatch.

Because my schedule is so hectic, I’m going to have a very limited San Diego Comic Con this year. Tune into Revenge Of’s broadcasts from the show for a fun little thing I’ve doing with them, and on Friday catch me at two DC Comics events:

Star Trek: Red Shirts # 1 drops tomorrow from yours truly and Scott Buoncristiano. I promise all the corpses you expect from Red Shirts, but this one is hiding a couple of big time secrets that we want you to experience cold. (Like a Klingon’s revenge).

We’ll talk more about this after you get to enjoy it. I appreciate that IDW & the folks at Paramount were willing to play so rough, and hide the story on this one. Scott, remains the star here.

I’d like to shout out both CB Cebulski and Steve Wacker. Many years ago CB rang me the morning he succeeded Axel Alonso and assured me that there would be continued smooth sailing for me at Marvel. I was grateful to have had some of my favorite collaborations under CB’s tenure. Everything from the wrap of my Deadpool collaboration to Savage Avengers and of course, X-Men. A huge amount of my creativity over the last decade has been permanently cemented into the Marvel Universe, and now orbits are shifting once again. CB will head to Japan and he will undoubtedly succeed there…while Steve Wacker sits down for the adventure of his life. I don’t think senior leadership at Studios could’ve made a better decision for someone to lead the comics into the future. Steve’s love is true, he has great taste, and he’s enjoyed a career working with artists across many different fields that will bring him and Marvel Comics much success. I don’t think I’ve ever written this word but — Excelsior! The best is yet to come, for me, for Marvel Comics, and I hope for you, too.
