History

DMSO is an acronym that stands for Dimethyl Sulfoxide. It was first synthesized in 1866 by Alexander Zaytsev, a Russian scientist. DMSO is a by-product of kraft pulping which converts wood into wood pulp leaving almost pure cellulose fibers. The process entails a treatment of wood chips with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, breaking the bonds which link lignin to the cellulose. It was used only as an industrial solvent until it’s medical properties were discovered in 1963 by a research team led by Dr. Stanley Jacob, MD

DMSO is an intermediate product of the global Sulfur Cycle which distributes bioavailable sulfur for all animal and plant life (Parcell, 2002). Sulfur compounds are found in all body cells and are indispensable for life, they are needed for a number of chemical reactions involved in the detoxification of drugs and other harmful toxins, and they have potential clinical applications in the treatment of a number of conditions such as depression, fibromyalgia, arthritis, interstitial cystitis, athletic injuries, congestive heart failure, diabetes, cancer, and AIDS (Parcell, 2002). Among the sulfur compounds, DMSO is probably the one that has the widest range and greatest number of therapeutic applications ever shown for any other single chemical. It has around 40 pharmacological properties that may be beneficial in the prevention, relief or reversal of numerous diseases (Morton, 1993).

For horses, DMSO is commonly applied topically or administered intravenously to treat laminitis, surgical colic, arthritis, soft tissue injuries, and increased intracranial pressure. It is also used to flush guttural pouches and enhance the penetration of other medications like steroids or antibiotics.

I have used it for my horses and have made a medicine for my chickens using 50% DMSO (99 %) and 50% Colloidal Silver with amazing results. My current Rooster, who can be, you know…a rooster! We have an interesting relationship. There are times each year where he gets real weak and can’t even pick up his head, usually Spring and Fall. I give him the medicine when it happens. One dropper full for 3 days, and he’s back to normal wanting to spur me again when I walk by him. So much for being grateful!

My Experiences

Over the years, I have read a lot of research papers regarding the use of DMSO with people, horses and other animals. I keep it in the my medicine cabinet and in the barn. It is a medicine like no other, but also must be used with knowledge and great care. I have strongly advised many of my clients to do their homework on the use of DMSO for themselves and their animals. There will be a book and website list at the end of this article.

In 2019, my Mother was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma and given 6 months to live. She was not interested in the conventional treatment with the many side effects we read in the literature the hospital gave us. I asked her what she wanted to do, and she told me she wanted ME to treat her. I ordered everything we needed to get started. My Dad used a 50% DMSO solution applied with an organic cotton ball, directly on the tumor and the area where they removed the smaller one on her shoulder weeks ago. She tolerated it well so we went up to 70%. Within 60 days the tumor was gone! Her own Dr. was mystified. Although DMSO is unpleasant to smell, tastes pretty bad and leaves the person using it smelling like oysters, it is a very powerful medicine when used correctly. Mom would never go beyond topical. I also made her Essiac Tea. Her cancer never returned.

One of my horses, Khubie, who has passed on years ago now, was running through the field in the dewy grass and slid a few feet, then went into a summersault and rolled over his right shoulder, and back up on his feet shaking. He couldn’t move. I watched the whole episode and ran over to examine him, then ran to the barn and grabbed my bottle of DMSO and a clean cloth. I slathered it on his shoulder where I felt heat and waited for him to settle. I have no idea how long we stood there, as when an incident like this happens, it warps time. I was able to walk with him slowly back to the barn where I could do a detailed check. He was a little tender on it for 2 days. I continued to treat it twice a day with 99% solution until he gave me the sign that he no longer wanted it. I imagine he was tired of tasting it. Yup, when you take it internally or externally, depending on the dose, you generally keep your distance from people for a couple days as they will certainly smell it.
