One of my past clients/friend sent me a FB post- “Houston Police Horses Go Bare”. Thanks Freya! So, I thought I would share this with my Substack readers. Obviously, “Bare” means- no metal nailed on horse shoes. I have provided barefoot hoof care for competing Dressage horses, Hunter Jumpers, a Thoroughbred Race Horse in Saratoga, Competitive Barrel Racers, Endurance Riders, Serious Camping/Trail Riders, Circus Horses, Buggy horses and ponies for many years.
There are articles that have circulated on the topic of Barefoot Police Horses by people I know well. Yvonne Welz, from the Horses Hoof, and Carole Herder from Cavallo Hoof Boots.
Most of my clients who embarked on the barefoot journey, used hoof boots during the transition from shoes to bare. Some kept them in a saddle bag in case they need them. I was an EasyCare dealer for many years. There were many more successes than not. I also have to say, as most of my clients know, I will be the first person to tell you that barefoot will not work for your horse, as he/ she indicates. Sometimes we can try again after we make dietary changes, have their teeth balanced, check for saddle fit, do some body work. There is more, but you get the picture. Holistic means everything in the horses life relating to or concerned with complete systems rather than with individual parts. Every horse itself needs to be treated as an individual. I am not married to methods. Your horse is my teacher every time I am in their presence. I have good relationships with farriers I trust in the event that a horse needs shoes to be comfortable.
