Grant Money in Action: Inside SheroCon 2026

Hey Shero Squad, 🌟

Two Saturdays ago, Shero Comics hosted our fourth annual SheroCon comics and gaming convention. It’s a FREE community event we created to introduce young people to female creators and show them the many career paths available in entertainment.

If you watched my Geeky Grants webinar, which is still available here on Substack, you’ll remember me talking about fiscal sponsorship and how it can allow projects with a social impact mission to pursue certain nonprofit grants and receive tax-deductible contributions without becoming a nonprofit themselves.

Well, here’s what that can look like in action.

This year, SheroCon was funded entirely through grants and community support raised under the umbrella of my fiscal sponsor. In previous years, I paid for much of the event out of my own pocket.

This time, I spent nine months raising $15K in grant funding and community support from individuals, organizations like the She Angels Foundation, and the City of Los Angeles through neighborhood councils and support from my City Council representatives.

And I truly feel like funding SheroCon this way made the event belong to the community in a whole new way. 🥰

Every week, my team and I are on here sharing grants, gigs, and opportunities. But I also wanted to show you what can happen on the other side of actually winning those grants.

So here’s a little look at what grant funding can actually DO.

The next SheroCon is officially loading for March 2027, just in time to celebrate Women’s History Month. 💜
