BREAKING: THEA1200 is officially an AMIGA!

When THEA12001 was announced in 2024, it seemed like the most significant Amiga news possible. Although other Amiga-likes were available, this would be the most mainstream effort since the earlier A500 Mini — only this time, with a working keyboard. When the games were announced, and the inclusion of Workbench, it seemed like the best thing ever for retro fans of a certain vintage was really coming.

Even THEA1200’s delay couldn’t put too much of a downer on things.

And now, it’s just got even better!

Today via Facebook, Retro Games Ltd made the following announcement:

𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐀𝟏𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭.

The 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐚 name has a new chapter.

With the recent announcement from 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐚 and the 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, we’re delighted to see the 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐚 brand move forward with a clear and unified future.

We’re proud to be part of that future with 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐀𝟏𝟐𝟎𝟎, bringing the 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐚 experience to a new generation while celebrating everything that made the original so special.

Things have been complicated in the world of Cloanto/Amiga Corporation and Hyperion. While the 2009 agreement has seen some considerable strains over the past few years, the backdrop of the retro gaming explosion, and a revived Atari, appears to have focused things somewhat.

On August 4th, both parties announced a new settlement, which basically looks like this:

• Classic/68K Amiga — controlled by Battilana/Amiga Corporation

• AmigaOS 4/PPC — controlled by Hyperion, operating under an Amiga Corporation licence

Because THEA1200 is designed to run like a classic Amiga, it can now claim to be an Amiga. In fact, some people have spotted a revision to THEA1200’s packaging:

Others (commenters on Facebook) have suggested that the A1200 branding on the casing might be revised at some point, although given the manufacturing turnaround, this doesn’t seem incredibly likely for the first run.
