Data Storytelling is an oxymoron

Figures & Figures · The Information Design Insider

Data is supposed to be objective fact. Cold, hard numbers that represent reality without bias. Pure information.

Storytelling is inherently subjective. It requires a point of view, characters, and deliberate framing of details. It's about persuasion and emotion.

When you combine them, you're pretending you can have it both ways. You can't.

The moment you turn data into a "story," you're making choices about what to show, what to hide, and how to frame it. You're inserting yourself between the audience and the facts.

That doesn't mean it's unethical. It means be honest about what you're doing. You're not just "letting the data speak" - you're interpreting it, filtering it, and packaging it for consumption. Admit that.

The best data communicators acknowledge this tension instead of pretending it doesn't exist. They're transparent about their choices and humble about their conclusions.

The problem isn't the contradiction itself. It's pretending there isn't one.
