Futurist Thomas Frey · The Relevance Gap

The greatest career risk isn’t losing your job—it’s losing your relevance. In an accelerating world, staying current has become a lifelong discipline.

There’s a particular kind of dread that didn’t exist a generation ago. It’s not the fear of losing your job. It’s the quieter, more persistent fear of doing everything right, showing up, working hard, staying competent, and still discovering that the ground has moved anyway. I call this feeling the Relevance Gap, and it’s becoming one of the defining psychological experiences of our time. It’s the widening distance between how fast the world is changing and how fast any one person can reasonably keep up with it.

I’ve spent decades studying how technology reshapes work, and I’ve watched plenty of gaps open and close over the years. What makes this one different is its speed. Previous generations had time to notice a gap forming and step across it. This generation is watching gaps open faster than most people can even name them, let alone leap over them.
