Futurist Thomas Frey · The Relevance Gap

The best businesses don’t just generate income—they answer deeper questions about purpose, contribution, and the work you were meant to do.

Every business ever started began as a question mark. Somewhere behind the spreadsheets, the logo design, and the first nervous sales call, there was a person asking, “What am I actually here to do?” Most people think they start a business to make money. But dig one layer deeper, and you’ll find something else driving the wheel — a search for meaning that money was never going to satisfy on its own.

I’ve spent decades watching entrepreneurs launch ventures, and here’s the pattern I keep seeing: the businesses that last, the ones that survive the brutal first three years and grow into something bigger, are almost never built by people chasing a market opportunity alone. They’re built by people who stumbled into their purpose while trying to solve a problem, and the business became the vehicle for that discovery rather than the destination.
