For more than a decade, Rockstar Games has tried to control almost every glimpse the outside world gets of Grand Theft Auto VI, the long-awaited successor to one of the most commercially successful entertainment products ever made.

That control was supposed to loosen on August 27, when Rockstar plans to premiere an extended look at the game through Netflix before releasing it elsewhere six hours later. Instead, somebody else appears to have gotten there first.

Over three extraordinary days, a person or group calling itself CyberLeek has released apparent development footage, an alleged map and increasingly provocative messages aimed at Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive. What began as another gaming leak is now starting to look like something else entirely. That being a potentially international cybercrime case in which the perpetrator may be generating new evidence every time another video appears.
