FreshFund · Fresh Fund news & updates

We all recognize the importance of product-market fit and founder-market fit in building successful ventures. Recently, however, we’ve observed another critical dimension among founders in our portfolio: Founder-Purpose Fit.

Founder-Purpose Fit captures the alignment between a founder’s personal motivations and the deeper meaning behind the problem they’re tackling. These founders are driven not just by the opportunity to build a large business, but also by an underlying purpose—a desire to create meaningful impact. This alignment often drives their resilience, creativity, and determination to tackle complex challenges that often require longer timeframes to achieve success.

We’ve observed this alignment most strongly in domains like climate, healthcare, biotech, and now defense—areas where the stakes are high and the potential for global impact is significant.

These purpose-driven founders don’t always begin as experts in their chosen industries. Instead, their commitment to the cause drives them to immerse themselves deeply in a problem space, rapidly gaining expertise, forging partnerships, and building networks needed to succeed. Their ability to evolve into domain leaders stems from their connection to the purpose behind their work. While other forms of extrinsic motivation may at times become depleted, an intrinsic sense of purpose can fuel a founder's journey almost endlessly.

Importantly, purpose is not a substitute for business fundamentals. Founder-Purpose Fit enhances, rather than replaces, the need for a strong market, a sound strategy, and a clear path to profitability.

Our portfolio reflects the strength of this type of founder. Dr. Michal Tsur, for instance, a serial entrepreneur behind Cyota and Kaltura, was driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact in healthcare. She leveraged her experience to co-found Remepy, pioneering a new category of Hybrid Drugs. Similarly, Dr. Dan Deviri, a scientist with expertise spanning biology, physics, and chemistry, sought to address the climate crisis. Through extensive research and engagement with the field, he co-founded CarbonBlue, which develops an innovative water-based carbon dioxide removal solution. These are just two examples, with many more across our portfolio.

While as a 'generalist' fund we actively seek to support various types of founders across all domains, partnering with those driven by meaning and purpose is especially inspiring.
