Hello friends! Welcome to another batch of Fresh Donuts. We’re in the middle of a heat wave, or rather, a heat dome (I guess it doesn’t come in waves anymore). It’s the kind of hot where you get second degree burns from a seat belt buckle, where an ice cream cone lasts maybe a minute, where all I want to do is splash around in a lake and sip lemonade in the shade – but alas, I am overcoming the summer malaise to bring some Fresh Donuts to your inbox. Ok, I have an ulterior motive… it’s also my first pub day!
Duck and Cat Ride the Riverboat comes out today, June 24th! It’s been at least a couple years in the making, and well, I’m proud (and I don’t want it to be an abject failure) – so I’m out here talking about it, posting about it, practically begging you to buy it. It’s full of little jokes, life lessons about the perils of getting hangry, and friendship.
But I didn’t just write this newsletter to hock some books, I also made a comic inspired by this heat wave… it stems from my love of bad infomercials from my youth. If you’ve ever ordered anything from Ron Popeil, then you know what I mean. Does anyone remember the ‘Hair in a Can’ invention… just spray it on your bald spot, and presto, full head of hair (or whatever is in that can).
I feel you kitty, I really do!
Anyway, I just wanted to go back to Duck and Cat for a second – because art imitates life, or vice versa… I thought I’d share one of the first seeds planted for Duck and Cat Ride the Riverboat. It was a few summers ago, I was taking a bike ride with my loved one when Brielle’s River Queen came paddling by as we were enjoying the fireworks. A few months later, I was pondering stories about a Riverboat, and now here we are.
Well that’s going to do it for this batch of Fresh Donuts. Thanks to everyone who’s reading and enjoying this. An especially big thank you to my loved one, and loved ones who have probably bought more copies of this book than the general public – who are excited for me, even as I downplay it and expect the worst. Wishing everyone blue skies and cold lemonades!
