On 14 July, France celebrates its national holiday. For many people, the day brings to mind fireworks, parades, summer evenings, and gatherings with family and friends. Yet behind the celebrations lies a powerful idea: the belief that a people can shape its own destiny and strive for greater freedom.

To mark the occasion, I wanted to turn not to a speech or a historical text, but of course, as expected here, to a poem. And few writers are more closely associated with the great ideals of the nineteenth century than Victor Hugo.

In Célébration du 14 juillet dans la forêt, Hugo does something unexpected. Rather than describing Paris, crowds, or revolutionary heroes, he takes us into a forest. There, an ancient oak tree becomes a witness to history, celebrating the anniversary of the French Revolution alongside birds, flowers, and the summer landscape. Nature itself seems to rejoice in the ideals of liberty and hope.

This is a joyful and surprisingly original poem. Beneath its rich imagery and exuberant language, Hugo reflects on memory, freedom, renewal, and the passing of generations. More than a celebration of a single historical event, it becomes a meditation on the values that continue to inspire people long after the day itself has passed.
