Many organisations have invested considerable care in defining their purpose and values. Those words can provide direction, language and a standard against which decisions are considered.
But a stated purpose does not automatically become a lived one.
The test often arrives in ordinary moments. Who receives time and attention when the calendar is full? What happens to dissent when a decision feels urgent? How are mistakes treated? Which commitments remain visible when budgets tighten?
Purpose is the first pillar of the 4P Leadership Accelerator because it gives the work direction. Before asking a leader to change, we need to understand what they are trying to create and why it matters.
We then look at alignment.
If a leader says they want people to contribute openly, what happens when someone challenges them? If they value fairness, how are opportunities allocated? If inclusion is central to their purpose, whose needs are treated as standard and whose require special explanation?
These questions are not designed to catch leaders out. They help make an abstract commitment observable.
There will almost always be gaps. Leadership takes place inside competing priorities, imperfect systems and human relationships. The presence of a gap does not, by itself, prove hypocrisy. It gives us something specific to examine.
This is where curiosity matters. So does accountability.
Leaders can ask:
What do I say matters?
What does my calendar suggest matters?
What do my decisions reward?
What do people learn from my response under pressure?
Where is my impact out of alignment with my purpose?
Purpose becomes useful when it influences practice. It should be visible in how a room feels, how a decision is made and how power is exercised.
The aim is not perfect alignment at every moment. It is the capacity to notice, take responsibility, adjust and continue.
