A recruiter reaches out, and your first instinct is to ask an online group for help with due diligence. Wrong instinct.

Asking a broad, open-ended question makes it obvious you aren’t willing to do independent digging. You’re asking strangers to do your homework. That rarely produces the information needed to evaluate an opportunity, if any information at all.

Start with research. Then search LinkedIn for first-degree connections who work at the company or have worked there previously. Look for second-degree connections who can provide a warm introduction.

Preparation leads to better responses. Specificity leads to better insight. And targeted outreach works better than asking the entire internet to do your thinking.

Posting “Has anyone worked here?” won’t build the network you need. Learn how to identify the people who can broker introductions to recruiters, hiring managers and better opportunities. Get Network Superpower: Leverage Your Connectors for less than an overpriced latte.
