Do you ever wonder what retired professors do with all their spare time?

Dr. Kanji Nakatsu is a Professor Emeritus - Pharmacology, Queen's University, Kingston, ON, Canada. He describes himself as a “Believer in evidence-based governance.”

He has recently notified the public of this upcoming event to take place in Kingston on August 24, at 3 p.m.

Here we learn more about the man behind the idea:

Looking deeper, we note that he was also a co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Physiology from 1998. Here he and a colleague outline the extensive history of the Pharmacology Society of Canada, which existed from 1956 to 2008.

Kanji is listed as one of over 20 current or retired academics, physicians or citizen researchers who make up the Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee of the Canadian Citizens Care Alliance, known as SMAC. His is one of various substacks written by follow advisory committee members included in the organizations’s monthly SMAC Stack feature.

We can see by way of Dr. Kakatsu’s example that CARE in this sense can be taken broadly. He cares deeply about pharmaceutical research being done not for profit but for public health directly — often in ways not being considered by those actually employed in the field of public health. He also cares, as we see above, about academic discourse, and below, about government accountability and electoral reform.

And when he cares, he engages directly, getting away from the keyboard and into physcal life.

Two summers ago, Dr. Nakatsu and his wife cycled across the county to promote awareness of the role of Vitamin D. They remain avid hikers, with Dr. Nakatsu (who casually goes by Kanji) wearing his “Are you getting enough [Vitamin D]? T-shirs in all sorts of places as seen on his Facebook page.

One of the main themes coming out of research into many vitamins these days is how the Health Canada recommended levels for sufficient vitamin intake levels may be set at a level to prevent this or that condition but they are still far too low to support OPTIMUM health levels.

Researchers are finding that 70-97% of Canadians were vitamin D insufficient, and 14-60% were deficient. Many clinicians and scientists have raised their concerns for sufficiency as a preventative public health measure. “A daily dose of 4,000-6,000 IU should be safe for the population and fulfill much of our human health needs. This is well above the 400-800 IU/d recommended by Health Canada.”

Kanji’s paper on Vitamin D was published in April 2024 by the Canadian Citizens Care Alliance.

In 2024, Kanji was also one of the driving forces behind this symposium on Vitamin D:

Here attendees learned, for example, that

Various factors such as nutrition, latitude, skin colour and genetics influences vitamin D. With several hundred genes regulating Vitamin D, the only way to know if a person has sufficient vitamin D is to test, don’t guess! Home test kits are available at ImmunoCeutica (ImmunoCeutica – Labs & Technologies)

It appears, someone, somewhere was listening:

at least partially listening…. the CBC reference the need for more vitamin D intake to avoid multiple sclerosis. It does not go so far as to include reductions to the financial burden of the health care system, should Vitamin D deficiency be addressed more broadly. Also, note the impact on Vitamin D for other prevalent health issues NOT addressed in the CBC article:

The CCCA is now publishing articles on range of health topics including these:

and this “must-read” for everyone. Notice how Kanji Nakatsu is the lead author of more than a few of these articles.

It is interesting to read what the former Pharmacology professor as to say about nutritional supplements and on the industry capture of vaccine regulations. In both cases, he shares what he notes as top writing by others in the field.

(Note: membership in the CCCA is open to the public, with laypeople invited to take part in weekly round tables with

Readers of this substack will have notice my attempts to use the Large Language Model GROK-4 to access publically available data in order when seeking accountability around government policy making.

Here we see that Dr. Nakatsu has been trying something similar using Copilot.

Looking up Covid on the Archive page of his Substack, we find a number of articles written or endoresed by this indefatigable professor.

These were the types of voices being filtered out of the mainstream bubble/echo chamber) for the past five years. (For more on echo chambers, filter bubbles and more, see this article out of Indonesia.)

More recently, Kanji has been looking into questions around electoral reform:

Clearly, Kanji is not just sitting back and putting his feet up in retirement!

I bet he is just as busy now as he ever was!
