I didn’t become properly, properly interested in skincare until lockdown when I became a little bit obsessed with Caroline Hirons. Before then, I hadn’t cared massively what I was slathering on my face and must admit I was always a little cynical about how effective some products could be.
I was a true fan of Clinique’s three step routine back in the nineties - I loved that green soap holder - and the mantra of ‘cleanse, tone, moisturise’ was all we needed to remember and was about as complicated as it got!
How things have changed! We are now bombarded by advice to use serums, vitamins, acids and SPFs and at the grand old age of 56 I now feel that I’ve got my skincare routine right. I’m happy with the line-up of products I use and they seem to suit my skin type pretty well.
I’ll share what I’m currently using on the off-chance that it may help you but as ever, please share your skincare ‘heroes’. I always like trying something new.
Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser
I love this face wash so much! I’ve been using it in the mornings for a few years now and it’s such a good one. It comes with a muslin face cloth but I love to use a thick, fluffy white flannel instead. It’s very cheap too which is a bonus and seems to last ages.
Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm
At the end of a long day, this balm is such a treat. I’ve tried a few similar ones (the Body Shop Camomile one is pretty good) but this is top tier. It’s rich and velvety and takes off every last bit of make up - even my waterproof mascara.
Skin & Me
If you’ve heard good things about tretinoin then you’ve probably heard of Skin & Me. It’s a subscription based company that dispenses tailor-made, prescription-strength ‘tret’. You send in photos, answer a number of questions about your skin and lifestyle and then you get a dispenser sent straight to your door.
You can pause your subscription at any time which I do if I’m going on holiday. I also tend to use it less in the summer. It’s very important that you use a good SPF the morning after you’ve applied this but honestly the results are incredible. It makes such a difference to the texture and luminosity of my skin.
If you want to give it a try, I have a special offer which gives you your first and fifth Daily Doser for just £3.50 each. Just click here
Clinique Moisture Surge Active Glow Serum
This is a recent addition to my morning routine. Sali Hughes is a big fan and I can see why - it’s made a big difference to my skin. The Vitamin C brightens and the hyaluronic acid plumps and moisturises.
Eucerin Oil Control SPF
I’ve been using this daily for years now and love how mattifying it is. As I have fairly oily skin I usually don’t bother with an additional moisturiser as this does the job perfectly.
Paula’s Choice
I always have a bottle of this lurking at the back of my bathroom cabinet and I probably use it once a week. It’s the best exfoliant out there, I think and I love the brightness and smoothness the salicylic acid gives my skin.
